Overdue for some new Irish action. Time for a lovely branch line trip south of Cork by DMU in the 1970s. We arrived from Dublin by main line train, took a tram across the city and joined our train at Cork Albert station...

Jump forward to the 1990s. The Irish economy is expanding confidently and CIE have introduced new air conditioned Derby built stock. That's if the aircon still works of course. Still, you can always get a can of chilled Guinness from the buffet...

My system is now much bigger than prototypical, but it is not yet overcrowded. Having reasonably small cities definitely helps with cargodist. No sign of electrification yet, though, though the Vulcans will need replacing soon...

Yup, its Iron Horse. Fantastic British style set, doesn't have the limitations of UKRS.

Really singing Iron Horse's praises here - the Tin Rocket DMU simulates the advantages of modern DMUs perfectly, with a 100mph top speed. Its made Sprinterisation possible for me on lines where loco haulage was losing money. Sticking to locos on my main routes, of course!

Meanwhile it's been time to start a new game to make use of the impressive SBB set...in the Central European Republic of Alpenland, famed for its precision timekeeping, chocolates and permissive corporate governance regulations. Early years yet. Its 1912 and the railways have linked the banking capital of St. Gallen to the commercial capital, Merzligen, but the next challenge will be to reach the outlying cantons over the mountains.
