If starting a new game should just av9 be used or stick with just av8 for now? If I use av8 I get a message about it not being required.

Personally I use av9.8, but that is a completely different set from this one.
The "not being required" message is about the old av8 extra aircraft grf; you definitely shouldn't use that one. The content of that grf was rolled into av8 years ago.

Ah! I mainly asked because I tried both and noticed av9 had nowhere near the amount of aircraft. So it's a whole new set to be used alone?

That is correct.
Av9.8 has the vehicles and stats which I will be using for the 32bpp av10, but still uses av8 graphics as placeholders. IMO it's a much more fun set to play with, but since it doesn't have anywhere near as many aircraft, nor real world aircraft, I'm sure many people won't agree.

Is this going under the bug section? Boeing 777 tourist refit have like cargo plane look? Just thought to report. I wonder the An-72, Orisis, Cygnet, Metrocity and Planchet are added in the wiki, but not appeared in the actual newgrf
I also found a bug on the Comet it somehow downgraded it's 4C variant to it's original one in 2050 when vehicles never expire option enabled

Could you add a parameter to change the range of planes and/or chopper ?
we often play on very big maps, and chopper are often unusable to reach offshore petrol of fishing boats using the Air :/

I went another route and quadrupled all of the plane ranges (doesn't make sense for a 737 to be unable to cover a 1024×1024 that's supposed to represent a country)..
But I ran into a problem with generational aircraft. I changed the CB36 parameters and property 1F of action0 (where applicable), and the purchasing list shows the new values, but the actual plane ingame still retains the old range.
Note that this isn't an issue with the DC-9/MD-80, as both models have the same range.
Did I overlook something?

Bit of a necro, and a very long shot as Damrus hasn't been on the forum since 2015, but I am running JGRs patchpack (0.26.1) and I cannot get Damrus' rangeless AV8 version to appear at all. I've put it in the same place as Marico and NewStations and I've tried forcing it to be enabled through the settings file, but, it just won't appear in the NewGRF list to be added to a game. Any ideas?

I guess it uses the same grfid as regular AV8 and thus is hidden because the game thinks it is an outdated version of it. I know this thread is very old now, but I'd like to know (and I hope Pikka sees this) if there is or if there is going to be an update that adds new real planes like the Boeing 787 and the Airbus A350. I'd especially like to see the latter since it's replacing the A340 type currently (as of now, it seems like the 787 and the 777 are going to share the skies for some years before one or the other is retired from service). In the game, the A340 is perhaps the best plane thanks to its 1,600 tiles range, but since it doesn't get replaced by newer Airbus models, you're forced to replace it with 777s that have much shorter ranges, or with 'futuristic' planes.

av8 isn't going to be updated, but there's no reason anyone couldn't make a companion GRF with newer aircraft in it. The av8 sprites are free for others to use or modify for OpenTTD projects.

GOT IT!!! Go to your "documents" folder of openttd; find the list of GRFs from Content_download; delete the Av8 file but leave the RAV8 in there. when you open your saved game, the program will substitute the rav8 as a compatible substitute. Open console and type .. "set newgrf_show_old_versions 1" will show all versions of the GRF's you have loaded .

Anyone tried playing this with reduced plane speeds? I know it's supposed to be played with 1/1 setting but It's way too fast for my taste (based on experience with base aircraft though, but it looks like these have the same "realistic" speed ranges like 500-1000km/h). Should I reduce the aircraft maintenance cost to compensate in addition to the reduction made by NewGRF itself? When playing with default aircraft I reduced airport maintenance to 1/4 but increased aircraft maintenance 2/1 (via BaseCosts) because having to pay for airports 10 times than all other infrastructure combined made no sense to be, yet I didn't want to abandon all other means of transport because aircrafts are so much more profitable. These settings I used seemed very balanced as I got roughly the same overall income/expense ratio from aircrafts as from trains or RVs. I'd like to achieve the same with this awesome set.

Is there any aircraft newgrf version with scalable aircraft ranges? Not entirely disabled range, just with some multiplier making it playable for large map with low city/industry density.
