"Couldn't start the server" - port forwarding problem?

Post by Nerdazoid »

Hi all,

My wife and I are trying to play ttd via the play-ttd.com site. I'm trying to create a server so that we can play together (we know how to live).

Everytime I try to start a server when I generate the map it says it couldn't start the server. I figured this was because I hadn't set up the port forwarding, and lo and behold, my ports are closed. I'm on talk talk with a Huawei 533 router. Apparently this combo supports port forwarding but I can't get it to work. Here are all the different settings combos I've tried:

So... (a) is there something obviously wrong with those settings and/or (b) do I need to do something else as well?

Thanks for your help!

The port forwarding settings look OK. But why are you trying to play via play-ttd.com? What if you try using the main version of the game?

If you just want to play together, you can use your LAN. In that case you don't need to open any ports at the Internet router.
Modern computers however have a firewall that normally also blocks incoming connections. You may want to check those settings too.

That's an unofficial project, based on an old version of OpenTTD, that completely ignores the license of the (original TTD) graphics used and breaches that of OTTD itself in several ways. While a brilliant demonstration of emscripten's awesomeness and quite a useful project, it's also illegal in its current state. :(

Why not just use the latest version of the proper game?

Thanks, everyone. The main reason we were trying to use that is because the missus is using a chromebook, so can't install the proper version of the game. I have installed the proper version and am now not getting that error, but play-ttd says my server is offline.

Thanks for your help. I didn't realise the online jobby wasn't official. shame all the pcs in the house are borken in different ways...

I think with the developer mode of the Chromebook you could try to run the Linux version off it? (didn't try myself though...)
