Earn money with Simutrans

Post by Doctor ZXXI »

Hi,

I'm new in Simutrans forum. I installed Simutrans tomorrow night and I try
to make money, but there are no passengers (or few, not enought to earn
money).

How can I make money ?

Thanks.

Passengers have destinations in Simutrans. AFAIK, that means the more destinations (stations) you have, the more passengers you'll get. Not sure though.

- you can start simutrans with -freeplay, so you wont get bankrupt

- also there is a beginners mode, which is easier to play, the revenues for transport are higher (?)

Passengers in simutrans have destinations:
- some will just use innercity-transport
- some will travel to other cities
- some want to go to work (you have to connect the industries to your passenger network)
- some will visit castles, monuments etc which lie around in the countryside

So you have to connect at most cities as possible. Be sure the entire city (esp. cityhall) is covered by stations (press 'v' to see the actual coverage).

The start with passengers is difficult. It will pay off once enough destinations (cities, industries, monuments...) are connected.

Hi,

Indeed, if passengers have destinations, there is different from OpenTTD ...

To connect cities, I think the best choice is train and to connect cities from
industries perhaps trucks ?

I try to do this !

I think in order to begin the best choice is connect one city to industries
around and other interest place (monument, castle, ...).

If I have two or more bus stop in the same city, could I have some
passengers who want to other bus stop ?

Thanks.

yes, there will be passengers that want to drive from one stop to another.

the more cities are connected to your network, the more passengers will use your trains etc. I usually use buses in cities and to connect monuments, industries. The trains are used for inter-city transport.

OK, in fact, where I have in my bus stop some passenger who have not
route, this indicate there are some passenger who are ready to use my
transport system, but my buses aren't going to they wanting to go.

I must to have more bus stop around the city.

Hi

You should take a look at http://guide.simutrans.com/, there is a guide, that you can download (and read :D)

First of all, after you start a new game try to find a COAL MINE and power plant. These two you should connect at first to start "moneymaker". This will provide you money for growing your network. If distance is small do use trucks. If there is a lot to travel with coal - use train.
Try to choose best locomotive (cheap and powerful) and use around 14 "coal wagons".

Another easy way to earn money is transporting oil to OIL POWER PLANT. Click on one do find out where are the OIL RIGS/PUMPS.

When you establish moneymaker route you can search for another routes. Try to connect rigs to chemical plants. Remember: some factories need more than one supplies to start a production.

And, last but not least, PASSENGERS.
Personally I search for a big city, build first BUS STOP in suburbs. Why? Later on it will be connected with TRAIN STATION. Try to cover whole city with some lines. Every line should have this specific BUS STOP in its schedule. This way in every city there is one BUS STOP treated like main station. Now you build TRAIN STATIONS joining this BUS STOP and hopefully earn more money.

Simutrans is really great, but you have to get used to it.

Keep trying

Hi,

Thank you for yours advices. In one game I connect by train a power plant
to a coal mine and I buy a train to transport coal from the mine to power
plant but there is some wagon and no one for transporting coal ... I
don't understand ...

To begin, if I only connect this two industries without having a bus stop to
transport passengers from cities to this industries, may I make money ?

I begin a new game in which I do this.

Thanks.

Hi
I will try to explain to you coal problem using screenshots in this post.
In next I will show simpliest way of transporting passengers.

Well...
Any coal mine is connected with consumers. It will provide coal to this power plants only. After you click on a coal mine you will find its consumers. in this case it is power station.

Since it is quite far away we will connect them by train.

I have build two stations one for each: coal mine and power plant.
Notice platform length is 8 in this case. The longer platforms are, the more wagons it could service. Only cars that "fits" station will be loaded with coal.

Now I have build train depot and buy train. When buying wagons you will see "STATION TILES" indicator that shows you minimum length of station that you should build.

Next you should create new line. Remember to set "wait for" to 100% at coal mine station.

You can see now train is moving towards power station.

At the end train earns some money :)

Now we will transport some passengers to our coal mine. Notice PASSENGER LEVEL in coal mine's info panel. Here you can see, where you can find workers. Some of them live in Heppeden. You should build a road there. You can find more destinations for passengers nearby. I will connect them all, to transport more passengers.

I have built 4 stops, that you can see on screenshot. Now we will create a bus line.

Heppeden is unfortunately to small to provide enough passengers, but the whole process works for sure. You should find bigger city.

Conclusions:
Make sure you earn a lot of money by transporting coal or/and oil.
Then try to experiment on your own. I had to play several times to find this all, but now I enjoy this game more than any other transort games.

I did some work on Simutrans in 2001 - it's fairly old. ;)

But please don't dig up old topics when you've nothing to add to them.
