Played a spot of the pre-1.8 and I have to say:
- NPC villages, they're nice - it'll be great when the actual NPC's get there - but more importantly the caverns and abandoned mines are doing extraordinary things in the pants department, the sheer brilliance of it
- New blocks are brilliant, especially those viny green swamp things add a s*** of atmosphere
- Endermen are scary as s***, nice addition
- Rivers and the new terrain gen, amazing stuff there
- Creative mode, worked out well
- New lighting gives assload of atmosphere
- New bow works splendidly, new combat is nice
Add all the new small bits to this and I'm already humping my electronic computer friend until the official release and bugfix - seeing as i.e. dropped items from the workbench are unable to be picked up, furnaces don't work etc.

furnaces work fine for me. What I find quite annoying is that when I die, I lag the server that I play on (private with another friend) lags for about 30minutes
and I can't do stuff because of all the exp-orbs that dropped. (Takes 30minutes to pick them all up)

I've read about this exp-orb lag, apparently some servers have a fire you can die in (haha) somewhere central, so no-one holds too many orbs.

Well, the official 1.8 is out as of today, perhaps the lag issues with the exp orbs has been fixed.

I doubt it, usually when a lot of items are laying on the ground you will get lag anyway. I once had about 5 inventories full of cactus lying on the ground (automatic cactus farm and server didn't remove drops for a while) and when I was near it I got about 1 frame every 5-10 seconds.
A friend of mine has hired a server and I took the liberty of configuring it, so I now have my own creative-esque server. A survival map may be coming soon. You can join the server at 95.211.74.164:29767 if you want to, but you have to wait for me or another admin to be around to give you build rights. It also has a nice map which is updated in real time over here.
I was just thinking, what mods are you using?
I'm using: Buildcraft, Too many items, Minefactory reloaded, Red power and wireless redstone. And to get those mods working mod loader, mod loaderMP and minecraft forge.

Enjoy them. I've seen caves and amazing underground canyons through the glitches, makes for an amazing sight.

Nice description. Minecraft comes with several glitches out of the box.
I once had that everything would turn inside out and get weird colours at random and it would crash my pc if I didn't quit minecraft quick enough. Turning off advanced OpenGL did the trick in that case though.
Hmm I've not ever experience such kind of problems at all.
My minecraft seems steady enough, haven't had a single crash since 1.2 or 1.3 (when I joined).
The only odd things happening are block-lag or chunk-lag where you can see through the ground and see all the caves and such. But that is due to the available bandwidth on the server that I play on (private PC @ someone's home)

I'm usually using TooManyItems, Zeppelin, Better Than Wolves, wireless redstone and I'm considering Buildcraft for pipes and some other stuff.
I'm mostly centered around Zeppelin and utility/combat planes now.
Have you heard about the Technic pack? It has been featured in recent Yogscast videos and it is actually quite a nice pack. It has some pretty cool mods but also some mods that I don't like that much. It has some of the mods that you listed here in it with the exception of TooManyItems (which you can easily add) and possibly wireless redstone. Unfortunately the HD patcher and the pack don't go very well together
