VAST is a collection of graphics for OpenTTD that aims to allow players to build eye-candy tiles that can be used to visually improve games without necessarily adding functional tiles. The project is split into separate NewGRFs:

Basic NewGRFs

A generic set of graphics available as stations and/or objects.
  • VAST Stations [latest version: 0.2.0]
  • VAST Objects [latest version: 0.3.0]
Extension NewGRFs

Specialised graphics available as NewObjects that can be optionally used to develop a certain feature.
  • VAST+ Fences [latest version: 0.2.0]
  • VAST+ Infrastructure [under development - no release yet]
  • VAST+ Industry [under development - no release yet]
Basic Sets

VAST Stations provides three classes of stations:

Ground
Concrete, tarmac and coloured tiles.

Paths
Full set of modular tiles, all with four random variations.

Gardens
Some topiary shrubs of different sizes, a cluster of happy cypress trees and a small garden with four random variations.

Using some other station sets you could build something like this:
OpenGFX + VAST + NewStations + Canadian Stations Set + North American City Set (+ LV4 + 2cc Set + NH Foundations + Stolen Trees)
OpenGFX + VAST + NewStations + Canadian Stations Set + North American City Set (+ LV4 + 2cc Set + NH Foundations + Stolen Trees)

VAST Objects

This set goes beyond VAST Stations by adding many more objects such as parks, statues and fountains, adding climate variations and up to 4X zoom 32bpp graphics, and reducing the construction restrictions of the station set. Requires OpenTTD r25230 or higher.

Climate variations and zoomed graphics are partially complete and will be worked on. There are a few obvious placeholder graphics that are included for technical reasons but will be eventually be removed.

I recommend using this set over VAST Stations because it has much more content and the former has not been worked on for a while.

Extensions

VAST+ Fences is a set of fences available as objects. Requires OpenTTD 1.1.0 / r21454 or higher.
  • Features:
  • [0.2.0]
    • 6 fences; medium height (one tile high); placed on edge of tile, on corner or diagonally; flat (builds foundations on slopes) or sloped (adjusts to slope angle).
  • [0.3.0] [Unreleased; ETA: Very soon]
    • Build on steep slopes.
    • Fences placed in middle of tile.
    • Brick walls.
    • Whole-tile "checkpoints" for joining fences together.
    • Ground type support: variable snow and desert coverage.
    • Support for shoreline adaptation: draw a shore tile or a normal tile; parameter-controlled.
VAST+ Infrastructure will provide a set of graphics that override the base set, including: foundations, depots and headquarters. Not yet available.

VAST+ Industry will provide a set of objects for developing industrial areas, including: warehouses, shopping areas and car parks. Not yet available.

Source, Bugs and Assorted Thoughts

All of this project is licensed under GPLv2 and hosted on DevZone ( ). Repo link is https://dev.openttdcoop.org/projects/vast
The exception is VAST Stations, which is licensed under CC-BY-NC-SA v3.0.

Found a bug? If you're sure, you could register on DevZone and add a new issue to the tracker, or if you're not sure or want to discuss it, post it in the dev thread. That's also the best place to ask questions and float ideas.

Nice job, you've came back again with some more nice graphics, are you going to add more styles to this in future, and maby even platform tiles that match the gardens?

Yep, I have a load of hand drawings to convert to sprites. The priority now is to keep adding all of the planned sprites, then add more random variations, such as different trees and flowers etc (the flowered and straight paths have the best variations at the moment). At some point I want to include generic modular station buildings, and possibly seasonal changes in the style of mb's platform tiles. Getting all of the tile to mix well with other sets will be tricky. You can see in the first image that VAST looks ok with the North American City Set, but it stands out quite a bit against OpenGFX - whether that is a good thing or not is debatable.

Looks superb. I have not had time to test this yet, but do these change to accomadate snow? If not, is this something you plan on doing?

Glad to see people enjoying them :) I've added some draft sprites to the development thread if anyone fancies testing them.

It's something I want to do eventually along with seasonal changes. For now I will work on producing sufficient normal sprites to give the player enough variety. At some point (probably when I run out of ideas) I will work on adding snow/seasonal changes, and that will result in the first "complete" set.

Updated to v0.2.0. See above.

Added a few more tiles. Paths are now redder; brown tiles are browner. Flowerbeds on paths are less flowery, more green.

StationIDs have changed. Shouldn't be a problem to build over anything that has morphed into a new tile :)

Get it from the first post or BaNaNaS. :)

0.2.0 is on BaNaNaS. 0.2.5 is not, but it will become 0.3.0 after a few additions and will then be put on BaNaNaS.

These look amazing! The thing I love about these kind of NewGRF's is that it means building a station actually takes a year or so as I get everything just right!
