Is it possible to play in multiplayer games with a (perhaps self-made) AI instead of manually?

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you mean that you'd like to join a multiplayer server and then make an AI play instead of you, then no, it's not possible. Only the server operator can add AIs to a multiplayer game.

It's much faster to just spin up a single player game with a few AI's set up to start at the same time and then run the game at full speed until something breaks.
