Interesting point. I was actually just trying to replicate the commuter belt a bit. Quite a lot of branching and forking and merging and all sorts. The southern most one is just a short branch line. The intention was to have a big freight presence there.

I've added a line for the Southern railway (blue) to Portsey and finalised the approaches into Firbourne for the North Western (purple) and Western Coast railway (orange). The Cambrian railway is in red, and the lime green will be a small company dealing more dominantly in freight across the Dordenshire region. I've also done the City Metropolitan lines (white).

Moving out west and north now.

Looks like potential for some good old fashioned company wars on the west side there. And the Colnel Stephens like Dordenshire line is a cool idea.

Much slower progress than before but I am adding things where I can.

Not all villages will be connected of course...

I've totally redesigned the big capital of Firbourne to be rather more rail-oriented. I still haven't added the industries but the Firbourne Metropolitan Railway lines are now in place. The idea will be that outside companies can share the tracks of the FMR to access industries across the capital. Hopefully, there'll be plenty of "private sidings" and private owner wagons, too!

Map overview and a basic Tube Map-style mock up attached.

Thanks guys.

Hope you like some of the very crudely put together Welsh town names Mark haha.

I was wondering whether my coastal city should have a canal/river system.

Are there any precedents for large coastal cities having lots of waterways?

I'd say it's pretty common for coastal towns to develop at places where river running inlands meets the sea, and that then over time some sort of harbor/canal system is built there. It's perfect to get inland trade routes connected to oversea shipping routes.

& Hamburg apparently has more bridges than Venice, and, well, there's got to be something there to bridge over ... ;)

Birmingham has more canals than Venice... But is inland so doesn't count.

I guess I will have to look into it. I already have destroyed enough of the city for the railway stations.

I've finally got over being addicted to the capital and have branched out a bit, looking to the north and west... It's a lot harder than I thought to dream up magical places...

Anyway this is a provisional idea. As before, colours are:

Red: Southern Railway (no additional plans on this area of the map)
White: Firbourne Metropolitan Railway (no additional plans on this area of the map)

Blue: Firbourne and Western Railway
Orange: North Albion Railway
Green: Westhorpe and Devnentshire Railway

As you can see, the WDR actually strays rather far into Mercia, so that company's name is subject to change!

Here's a bit more...

Red: Southern Railway (no additional plans on this area of the map)
White: Firbourne Metropolitan Railway (no additional plans on this area of the map)

Blue: Firbourne and Western Railway
Orange: North Albion Railway
Green: Westhorpe and Devnentshire Railway

The Firbourne and Western Railway will probably be the map's largest, all things considered. As I'm using a patch with IS the WDR and FWR will share the route through Knightsford.

What do you think?

Interesting scope for some rivalry of some sort there. Though the green route to the coast may be undermined on cargodist by the blue - all part of the fun however.
