[OTTD] Carsts Scenarios / amongst others Earth Scenario, Europe Scenario, Germany Scenario

Hello OTTD players,

in this thread i'll presenting you my OTTD scenarios. Comments, critics and wishes for further improvements are welcome.

I will create a post for every scenario. If you post a comment please mention the specific scenario.

Available scenarios:
- Planet Earth complete - CarstsWorldScenario - 8192x4096 - based on satelite heightmap
- Europe - CarstsEuropeScenario - 2048x2048 - based on SRTM data
- Germany - not online, coming soon - 4096x4096 - based on SRTM data
- Berlin-Brandenburg - not online, coming soon - 4096x4096 - based on SRTM data
- Mega Funmap - CarstsMonsterScenario
- Trainingmap - CarstsTrainingScenario

Some general information regarding my scenarios:
  • Updated regulary for changes or new builds of TTD (but old versions should still work).
  • Actual version "v3" of all scenarios.
  • Besides the training- and mega-scenario i try to base all my scenarios on NASA SRTM-Data and try to include lakes, rivers and a good number of towns. Because the world-scenario was to large for merged DEMs from SRTM (read or i would have to scale them down too much) i just a geographical height map, that should be very realistic, too.
  • I use some GRFs (graphics enhancements) in all maps, that are DBSetXL, GermanTramSet, NewStations, PlaneSet.
  • You should be able to play all scenarios without these GRFs, but i will provide a zip- download containing all four. All rights stay at their coders and if one coder has a problem with me redistributing his work please contact me.
  • GRFs used in my scenarios, download link: Download
  • All my scenario downloads include a version to start in 1920 and one to start in 1950.
  • more to come...

Have fun playing!

Above picture showing British isles, part of Ireland and NW France (trees invisible).

Scenario Information:
  • Size: 8192x4096 !!!
  • Setting: Temperate
  • OpenTTD version: 0.6.0 and up (or corresponding nightlies)
  • Based on geographic heightmap (by satelite data, but non-srtm).
  • Some hundred cities, all based manually, but nearly on their real places. Included are the 150 largest agglomerations of towns, all towns with more than 1 million inhabitants, in some countries even the towns over 500.000 inhabitants, all capitals, all capitals of US and canadian states/territories.
  • Countries included: Whole planet earth with all countries.
  • Cities have sizes from <100 to 37.000 inhabitants. All real world inhabitants of towns or regions (agglomerations of towns) are divided by 1000, so a town of 4 million inhabitants has 4000.
  • Starts in 1920 or 1950 (2 versions included in zip-file download)
  • A lot of industries, all planted manually, oil- and coal-industry based on real world data.
  • NOTICE: Scenario can only be played with extra-large-maps-patch by Bilbo. Download a complete compiled version of OpenTTD inclusive this and other patches (close&update airports) and GRFs here.
  • NOTICE2: 4 GRFs installed => DB Set v0.82 (XL), NewStations v0.42, PlaneSet and GermanTramSet. You should be able to play the scenario without these GRFs, but a message will show up that they are missing. Download all 4 of them: Download
  • NOTICE3: Scenario Download is a zip-file. You need to unzip it into your scnearios folder, it includes a version starting in 1920 and one starting in 1950.

More information:
  • Dense trees / forests cover the whole world, the scenario is based on temperate climate. I removed all trees from very arid climate regions like deserts.
  • more to come...

NOTICE (repeat of above notice no1):
Scenario can only be played with extra-large-maps-patch by Bilbo.

Example Ingame Detail Picture:

Above picture showing Liverpool and Manchester in GB.

Scenario Information:
  • Size: 2048x2048
  • Setting: Temperate
  • OpenTTD version: 0.5.0 and up (or corresponding nightlies)
  • Based on SRTM-Date, scaled down with factor 3.
  • Some hundred cities, all based manually, but nearly on their real places.
  • Countries included: Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein, Andorra, Monacco, Italy, BeNeLux, United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Croatia, Bosnia, Yugoslavia, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Czech, Slovakia, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, Belarus, southern parts of Finland, Sweden, Norway and northern parts of Morocco, Algeria & Tunisia.
  • Cities have sizes from 600 to 18.000 inhabitants. Sizes of real towns were scaled down with the factor 200. A city of 4000000 inhabitants should have 20000 in the scenario...
  • Starts in 1920 or 1950 (2 versions included in zip-file download)
  • A lot of industries, planted automatically, some oil-rigs around British islands and south-west-coast of Norway.
  • NOTICE: 4 GRFs installed => DB Set v0.82 (XL), NewStations v0.42, PlaneSet and GermanTramSet. You should be able to play the scenario without these GRFs, but a message will show up that they are missing. Download all 4 of them: Download

NOTICE:
I will re-create the whole Europe scenario sometime in the future, I plan on doing it with a doubled map-size (will need extra-large-maps-patch like my world scenario). That will also open up the possibility to create rivers with the river-tool, not with normal water like in this version what "destroyed" the map in some places.
Wishes for the next version are welcome...

Nice maps, I the Europe map running on my server. Two things I want to comment on. One, there's a whole load of random industries, not everyone would like that setup on a scenario. Two, the landmasses are a bit blocky at the shores, maybe you could use a higher resolution picture in the future when you generate the heightmap. For the rest, I'll have to test it out, it looks like fun!

Like stated at the post about the Europe-Scenario, there will be a complete 4000x4000 remake, next time with a higher resolution and industries placed by hand.

But i won't start the the remake in the next month as i have a lot to do and when i have i time i will start with the Germany and Berlin/Brandenburg scnenarios.

The Europe remake could be ready by the end of the year...

Hi, (It's my first post :] )

I have just started playing OpenTTD yesterday and I downloaded yoru Europe map. Looks awesome! However I dont understand what those GRF's do? Somehow modify graphics but also add new or modify available traintypes etc? (Yeah I really am newbie! ) I downloaded them and Im wondering how to use them and if they also have effect on random maps I play?

I am also interested about the world map. It needs another add-on I see... Is that easy to get to work?

OpenTTD seems a lot of fun! Although I suck in it!

So welcome to the tt-forums!

yugular wrote:

Thanks, but the new version with realistic industries and a better heightmap used will be even better, release by end of year...

yugular wrote:

Well right, GRFs modify the grafics and example given you use the DB Train Set GRF, it gives you the opportunity to use all trains from Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) from 1920 - 2008+ instead of the standard trains. The original train grafics get replaced and some more added i think.

yugular wrote:

That's quite easy. Download the grf files and put them into your OpenTTD/data/AddOns folder. If there is no AddOn folder create one. Then enter the game and in the main menu at "New GRF options" or "New GRF menu" (sorry have the german version) click add grf or something like that and activate the available GRFs.
If you download my full package i offer with the maps you get a OpenTTD version with all recommend (but not needed) GRFs.

yugular wrote:

Yes, that isn't so easy. You could create your own OpenTTD build with "BuildOTTD" (google it or look into the thread about here in the tt-forums). But if you feel that is too much for you, just download my full version, that version has the maps, the GRFs and the patch for extra-large-maps included.

yugular wrote:

That's right, it is a looooooot of fun. And you will get better with every minute playing it. Look into the forums and see how others are playing, that could help, too...

CARST

I have a problem using this scenario. I have download all 4 GRF, installed and activated but when i start a new game using scenario, on unpause i take a warning about missing GRFs and (for now on) I don't have any road vehicle. The 4 GRF are the only third party GRF i use. Loading a different scenario no warning message shows. Any help?
I using OTTD 0.61

You downloaded the zip-file with the 4 GRFs i provided above?

If yes, unzip into "your-opentdd-folder/data/AddOns/"...

Check if the files are there. Activate them ingame. Restart OpenTTD. Then start a new game with the scenario.

Worked on every computer i tested, should work with 0.6.0 and above.

If there is a problem u can still add the GRFs after you loaded the scenario. And if it doesn't work that should be no problem, too, because in this case the standard vehicles get loaded. (They come up at 1925.)

At 1920 there are ONLY trains available. Road vehicles, airplanes and ships will be available in the next 5 years...

yes i have download all 4 GRF (from wiki link) and unzip them to addons folder.
I have download also the full set (game+scenario+grf) and the message still appears when unpause for first time the game. below i have attach a screenshot.
Ok for the vehicles you have right, i using the 1920 scenario. also for the message probably it won't harm the game (first i connected the message with the absence of vehicles)

edit:
also i see inside the game that the planeset has a exclamation mark, i don't know if this helps.....

I just downloaed it here to my second computer and started the world scenario in 1920.

I don't get the message, but i have the exclamation mark at the plane set, too. But don't worry, just ignore the message and the exclamation mark, i think the GRFs will work without problems. As u started in 1920, look at the available trains. If there are the BR92 and E62 the GRFs are loaded and working.

But i want to mention you don't have to play my scenarios with the GRFs. These are just the GRFs i am using and that were activated when creating the scenario. If you choose to not use these GRFs or use other GRFs this will be no problem, just the message will appear once when you load the scenario the first time.

Is there some novelties on when you will release the German scenery? I would want to try the German set in realistic way and I have not found anybody that Germany has reproduced.

Hello Emperor,

the last months were very stressful and i had no time to continue my work on my scenarios.

I will continue my work this or next week and i hope to release at least one scenario before November ends; that should be the Germany scenario.

In december i will have to time again, but in January and February i will have a lot of time, i will use these month to finish my Berlin-Brandenburg scenario and recreate the Europe scenario in a bigger and more realistic version.

Regards,
CARST

Hi! Could you also make a worl scenario file starting for example in 1830. I started playing a scenario from 1832 a while ago (with the extended US set) and have really enjoyed it a _lot_ more than I have enjoyed any of my previous TTD games within the more than 10 years I've been playing the game! (I think it was 1997 when I bought my TTD at the age of 11).
Somehow it makes the company feel more real when you have to begin the game with a 50hp 32km/h locomotive, without having the possibility to kickstart your income with buses connecting two cities with low running costs, like you'd usually do in the early years of a TTD game :)
In a game beginning in the beginning of 19th century you must build very carefully or you will go bankrupt in no time. And then, later in the game you will have a very curved and antiquated train network, that you need to smooth out once you get locomotives with enough horse powers. (Or, actually kilonewtons, because those are what really count. But whatever :))
The mountains need to be crossed via tunnels or by building a zig-zag track on the mountain side, climbing two squares after each level advancing of 5-10 squares, which is just like it happens in reality, as well. In the beginning of the game, when a train can be considered to produce huge profit if it makes 30000 euros per year, you really can't go cutting mountains flat like you can in a game beginning later and infinite amounts of money falling from the sky after 15 years of game time.
And smoothing out those zig-zags is precisely what's happening in Europe at the very moment. New routes are being built, now that the trains can climb steeper hills and tunnels aren't that expensive comparing to the volume of income.

And.. Nowadays living in Berlin, I would also be happy to get to play the BBB scenario ASAP! :)
