Photo of the Month - May 2017 - Entries

Post by Voyager One »

And here we go!

Theme:
"THE SERENITY OF ABANDONED PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION VEHICLES"
... set by the last month's winners Hyronymus and Transportman.

... freely open to interpretation...

As always, rules can be found HERE.

How to enter:
Easy - simply upload your image to this topic to enter or link it from a trusted site such as flickr, photobucket, DeviantArt, your personal website etc.
Uploading is preferred as it keeps things together. If you're linking from a URL, having a small 'preview' image and a link to a high-res image would be helpful.
If uploading direct to the wiki:
Let's keep entries in a certain named format for organisation reasons as well as keeping record of them in the entries topic and here. If you prefer to upload to the wiki, please keep it in the same naming format as other entries and inform me they are already on the wiki. Name format is - month|year|POTM_user name.
For example: 0517POTM_Dave.jpg / 0517POTM_orudge.jpg / 0517POTM_GeoGhost.jpg / 0517POTM_Ameecher.jpg
You get the idea ;)

At the end of the month, this topic will close and a voting topic will be started with all the entries in for people to choose their top one.
All entries will be uploaded to the tt-forums wiki and stored there for voting and also for archive.
Entries close on the last day of the month, voting will be available for 7 days (approximately).
The winner will need to contact me about what they want the next theme to be and then that will be posted in the entry topic for the next month*. Then we repeat from there. Simple.
(* If the winner doesn't choose a theme within 7 days, the next month's theme will be an "Open" theme).

If you wish to change your entry, you may so long as the entries are still open. Simply upload a new one to the topic and remove your old one.
Otherwise, it may get confusing as to which one you are entering. If there are two entries submitted and you have not informed me which one you wish to be used, I will use the first one posted.

Cheers people!

P.S. I don't think we've ever had a longer theme title...

If you know about the First MTR take over of the South western franchise then you'll know what this 707 is doing here. I have interpretited this freely...

Would it ruin the fun if you explained it a little? Not everyone on this forum is familiar with the railroad troubles in the UK :).

They're brand new trains that are going to be rejected by the new Franchise operator, and they've got no new home yet!

An explanation of my entry for those who don't know the ins and outs of the UK's railways:

A little while ago, as part of a capacity improvement plan, the South Western franchise holder (SWT/South West Trains) decided to order a large new fleet for the lines towards Windsor and Reading. Recently these have started to be delivered from Germany (I think at about a rate of 1 per week). Driver training on these new units had just started when the news came that the next franchise holder (First MTR) who are taking over this summer don't plan to use the 707s. This means that they will be abandoned very shortly after being bought into use, until First MTR decide what to get instead. They can currently be seen hanging round Wimbledon depot and Clapham Junction yard.

Oh wow, that surely stirred a debate I imagine. Was it plain arrogance of SWT to order new trains without being sure to keep this franchise or was it tactics gone wrong?

@ Gwyd : I have to admit it's not very clear to people from other parts of the world. Children in Africa could eat those trains !

Well, generally the trains get transferred between the Franchises no issue, so either way the Trains were expected to remain with the South West Franchise (they were needed to increase several trains which currently run as 8-Car trains to 10-car trains), however, First have decided they are too expensive to lease (I think that was the reasoning), and will replace them with even newer, and cheaper trains after around a year or two of 707 service.

There are rumours about a home for the 707s, however, it is all likely idle Speculation at the moment. They could be converted to run off of 25kv AC power, and run in most places on the (electrified) British Rail Network, so there is hope for them yet!

Also, Hyronymus, long time since I've spoken to yourself, hope you're well!
