Locomotive for power generation (like 1998 Ice storm)

Post by NekoMaster »

I know that diesel-electrics can provide a lot of power, and they also power Head end power either from a connected generator to the main traction motor or a seperate generator.

Though I remember when I was a kid I learned about the 1998 Ice Storm in Ontario/Quebec, it got so bad that Canadian National actually sacrificied a locomotive to power a neighbourhood. CN 3508, a MLW 420

Has stuff like this happened else where or is the 1998 ice storm the only case a diesel was pulled off the rails for back up power

EDIT :

If anyone has a video of CN 3508 or another locomotive off rails delivering power to a community as a back up that would be awesome!

A number of 47s were used as static generators back in the '80s/90s. If I remember they were used as backup at a power station?
Very much a retired regular poster..... If you can say that

Think you could get me some information on that? Pretty sure that Class 47's are much more powerful then a MLW-420

There is a brief mention about a Class 47 (47155 to be precise (now 47815)), being used as a temporary generator at a Power Station in Essex here. :) Even mentions how much power it probably supplied too.

This definitely took a lot of internet trawling to find too!
