I love Narrow Guage Railways!
The link in the picture in my sig is leading to one.
It is a project to complete an old closed railway that will link up with the famous Ffestiniog Railway to create 40 miles of narrow guage railway!

Narrow Gauge-Lines sure are nice to look at from a railfan's point-of-view. But seen from a more general view, they're far from being the optimum, as interchange of trains/(freight) cars between narrow gauge-lines and standard gauge (or, in "Killer 11"'s case, broad gauge) is complicated and slow - if even possible.
Because of this, narrow gauge lines tend to attract less passengers and freight than standard/broad gauge lines. In Germany, freight on narrow gauge lines has been (with 1 exception) suspended because of the complicated interchange of freight cars (standard gauge cars were put on special narrow-gauge flat cars for the journey on narrow gauge, which made transport far too expensive to be competitive). Other lines have been shut down between the 1950ies and the 1980ies due to this.
The remaining german narrow gauge lines "on the continent"(*) are more or less run as tourist attractions and transport more passengers, who come to see the narrow gauge trains, than those who actually want to go from point A to point B. And that's what I think a railraod should be for - transporting people, not being a tourist attraction.
(*) = The narrow gauge lines on the german islands of Wangerooge and Borkum are an exeption, as those do have a transport-purpose in connecting the island's villages (there's one on each) with the island's harbour.
Also an exception are some narrow-gauge rack-lines in the alps, which really transport people up the mountains "Zugspitze" or "Wendelstein".

The one that closed near me was a passenger railway, linking snowdonian villages and slate quarries with the horbour at Porthmadog. Fortuanlty for the FFestiniog railway, the etire welsh highland railway property went into reciervship after closure so they bought it all back in one go, instead of buying back the land from about 500 different owners. Also when it join up with the ffestiniog railway, it will be 40miles long, the longest narrow guage railway of its kind
