I am intrigued by JamieLei's bad date. I have sent you my 2010 wall calendar and would be appricieative if he would remove all of the "bad" dates. :p

Amongst other tasks, I'm a 'station control point operator', which usually means trying to fix the electronic information system and trying to get some sense out of my TOC's central control, whilst giving out various journey plans to passengers

Heh, today's journey was a doozy, but it was quite fun. Almost hit some idiots walking on the tracks too! :P

Part one:
From: Filmore (Pasadena)
To: Pacific (Long Beach)
Company: Metro Rail (LACMTA)
Stock: Breda A650; Nippon Sharyo P850; Siemens P2000; AnsaldoBreda P2550
Details: A nice trip to the beach, spent the Blue Line portion pointing out to my buddies the old right of ways of the Pacific Electric along the way. (That also includes the Blue Line itself too! :) ) There was an odd mass presence of police at Union Station, but otherwise it was a quiet trip.

Part two:
From: Pacific (Long Beach)
To: 7th Street (Downtown Los Angeles)
Company: Metro Rail (LACMTA)
Stock: Nippon Sharyo P850
Details: Was headed back toward I was lodged for the night, but decided to visit the old Pacific Electric Building. :D About a mile south of Watts there where some kids walking down the tracks, delayed our train for about three minutes. Dumb kids where just leasurely walking, even with the tram bearing down at them at 55mph. :|

Company: London Midland, all the way!

From: Los Angeles Union Station
Destination: Via Princessa
Company: Southern California Regional Rail Authority
Stock: MP36PH-3C & 3 Bombardier bi-level commuter coaches
Details: Going homeward bound after quite some adventure these past few days. (Luckily I didn't get run-over by people going to that Rose Parade thing. :P) My ride was willing to pick me up in Santa Clarita, so I arranged to meet them at Via Princessa. Oddly, I was kicked off of the seat I had on the mid-level. It's not like the car could have impact with a jeep on the tracks during pull ops, so I have no clue as to why. It's like everyone is doing what they can to spoil anything fun for me. Although, I did have a very tasty bagel at Union Station, by some very beautiful decorations. :D

From: Oldenzaal
Destination: Enschede Drienerlo; via Hengelo and Enschede. (Enschede is behind Drienerlo, but I went there first, savvy?)
Company: Syntus and NS
Stock: Alstom Coradia LINT and NS Class 3400 (aka DM'90 or Buffel)
Details: Going to the cinema, while first doing some light shopping in Enschede.
That's about it. It snowed on the way back, but by miracle the trains were still going. :P

Destination: Buffalo
From: Toronto Union Station
Company: VIA/Amtrak
Details: Pretty good, I had a lot of leg room and room for myself. Also my seat was very close to the snack car, so I had enough food! Also my seat was on the last car, so I could look out and see the tracks rolling away

From: Durham
Destination: Tooting Bec
Connections at: London Kings Cross
Company: East Coast, London Underground (Northern Line)
Train Class: IC225 and then 1995 stock
Details: Pretty textbook really, despite the fact that there has been snow on the ground for 3 weeks in County Durham and it was a whiteout near Doncaster. Snow gradually got less the further south we went. Train arrived on time at Kings Cross, and it was also very quiet on the train - I always book the quiet coach, today no one even sat next to me. Tube also relatively quiet as it was only 4pm when I got to London. Slight oddity at Kings Cross is they seem to have built a new entrance to the Northern Line out of nowhere, probably to give it better access from St Pancras (well I guess that explains why they closed the old tunnel into the station!).

yay trip!
Destination: Pennsylvania Station, New York City
From: Toronto Union Station
Company: Amtrak/Via
Details: pretty nice, part of the ride was at night, well, when we pulled into Buffalo it was the middle of the night, and we arrived at day time! Anyways, I met a bunch of people in the snack car, because I work there (on my laptop) and read there. We were a pretty full train, and ran out of seats, so we had a lot of people sleep in the dinning car... thus more friends for me!

Out of interest, how long does it take to go from Toronto to New York? In terms of distance it's pretty similar to Dundee to London, which would take about 5 hours on the train in the UK. Sorry I know very little about the US network outside of the Eastern Seaboard! Also what are the coaches like?

When I did it (in the other direction), it was very much an all-day thing, I think the train left at about 8.30am, and got in later than scheduled at about 11pm (it was scheduled for around 10pm). It did only cost C$99 though. ;) Some photos and videos up on my photo gallery/Flickr in the Toronto/New York album.
