And another couple:
Sunday (11/12):
1245 Nations to Gare-Cornavin on 875 (Tram line 15)

Today (12/12):
1002 Genéve to Genéve-Aeroport hauled by 460 009-4 (again!), made me if it was the same lot of carriages, that had just been turned around somewhere, or if they had been swapped.

1538 Fiumicino Aeroporto to Roma Termini on 043-A (I think it was an ETR425, Idk Italian trains!), Leonardo Not-So-Express Train

Saturday I had a lovely ride on 142088 from Wakefield to Huddersfield, leaving at 11:44.
Two door related issues, trains leaving WKF were delayed due to a slam-door CrossCountry trains doors not... slamming. Took a while before they managed to get one to slam properly. Later on the 142s doors needed a little influencing (read as: the driver kicking the door in) before the train allowed itself to be set off without a door open alert.

And another few:

Tuesday (13/12):
1027 Colosseo to Termini on 439 and 440 (Metro B)
1038 Termini to Spagna on 336 and 335 (Metro A)
1615 Colosseo to Termini on 105, 106, 317, 318, 104 and 103 (Metro B)

A few words of advice I have about about the Rome Metro. It is very run down, the vast majority of stations and trains are covered in Graffiti (though a lot of Rome seems to be like that to be honest)

Earlier today (14/12):
1105 Roma Termini to Fiumicino Aeroporto on 066 (an ETR425), Leonardo slightly-more-Express Train (Though I don't think said train went about 60mph).

1752 Aeroport Charles de Gaulle 2 TGV to Gare du Nord on 8304, 8303, 8132 and 8131 (RER Line B)
1849 Gare du Nord to Montparnasse-Bienvenüe on 73 and 74 (Metro Line 4)

And the last ones of my trip!

Yesterday (15/12):
1538 Saint-Michel to Montparnasse-Bienvenüe on Set 04 (Made up of 007 and 008), Paris Metro Line 4.

Earlier today (16/12):
1253 Montparnasse-Bienvenüe to Gare du Nord on Set 10 (Made up of 019 and 020), Paris Metro Line 4.
1341 Gare du Nord to Aeroport Charles de Gaulle 1 on 8156, 8155, 8254 and 8253, Paris RER Line B. This Train was originally supposed to go all the way through to Terminal 2, but due to a strike, most trains were terminating at Terminal 1 (as well as a reduced service being run.
1418 Terminal 3 Roissypole to Terminal 2 on Train 1, CDGVAL people mover. I ended up on this to complete my journey to T2 instead!

1904 Manchester Airport to Manchester Piccadilly on 156425. The train was delayed by 4 minutes, which was perfect for me (I'd only bought my ticket at 1905), and was Express through to Piccadilly, by which time, it was on time!

Hanoi to Lao Cai by sleeper train last night. Anything but smooth and quiet but it did the job and cost me about £10 so can't complain. Now breakfast in the mountains of Vietnam.

JFK Airtrain to Jamaica, connect to J to Canal Street...

Cold weather and snow on the ground meant I got to see LIRR's remarkable method of keeping switches from freezing: just setting them all on fire.

Surely that is done remotely rather than someone having to do it manually?

Nope - if you look closely under the lights at far right, you can see the blurry outline of one of the two very cold looking men who seemed to be walking around tending to / lighting the fires. I am not sure if it is an applied gel-like fuel, or if it is centrally piped gas, but it seems it does involve guys walking through an active station throat to run. This is not some remote backwater either - Jamaica station would typically still see several trains an hour even late at night, and generally gets over 1000 trains per day.

For what it's worth, the subway does not seem to employ this method on it's above-ground sections, and Metra and the CTA in Chicago use electric heaters...

Two carriages missing on an IC, again, also again on a holiday and again meaning I reserved a seat for nothing. It's those days I really hate the DB. Oh, and of course I can have my reservation refunded at the nearest service desk, except that of course no train station here has any manned desks anymore. Sigh.

But I liked that the conductors let some kids make some announcements about getting on/off. That was pretty cute ^^

That's why you need high-speed multiple units, like the Pendolino's, you can't just take a carriage out of one of those!

I've never had any problems with DB in Germany itself, though, I've barely travelled more than 30 minutes on a single DB train in Germany  I have many issues with DB in the UK however, mostly it's subsidiary Arriva though!

I don't travel all that much on DB trains either, about 4 times a year back and forth on the same line, always EC or IC (which are supposed to be more reliable than local trains), plus the occasional local thing.

But it's ridiculous how often there's some problem. That the trains seem to be always 5-10 minutes late is no big deal since I don't need to catch any connecting trains, but carriages missing, carriages present but locked and unusable, interior lights not working, doors not working, engines not working, signals not working, overheads not working ... people committing suicide, people committing a crime on the train (the heck!), medical emergencies (alright, none of those are DB issues, but still).

It's ridiculous. Either I'm the most unlucky person in the world when it comes to train traveling or no train ever gets anywhere without running into some trouble.

Sounds like the British Railway's  And everyone here is always saying how efficient the German Network is by comparison! Looking at my travel record, the last train I was on a train in Germany (from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Schoenefeld Airport), it was 25 minutes late! Which is always good when you're trying to get to the airport in time for a flight!

My last journey was in 11 September 2016 from Brăila to Galați and back. First train was IR, the second was R and I took photos to every station on the road. No delays but the train from Galați shared the line with an other one to other destination.
I heard complainings at some problems to DB. In Romania these problems can't be named problems; there are many delays of 30,60,120,&more minutes... And the infrastructure is so bad as IC trains converted into IR trains.
I will go soon to a National Olympiad. The previous 2 years when I went to other National Olympiads I went by the train but this year I will go by the bus...

Couple of journey's from the weekend.

Sunday 23rd April:
0805 Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston via Crewe on 390157. Lots of free booze going around on that train, which I wasn't gonna complain about! Especially when the 2 departures afterwards were both dry trains!
1341 Euston Square to Wembley Park on the Metropolitan line
1825 Wembley Park to Euston Square on the Metropolitan line (not even that busy when you consider several tens of thousands of people were probably heading for these trains).

Monday 24th April:
1100 London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke on 390135. A pretty unremarkable journey to be honest.

I did a return trip from Cardiff (Newcastle) heading north to Dungog on the north coast line Monday April 24.

Departed Cardiff on a 8 car electric double decker EMU at 9:44 a.m. to Hamilton arrive 9:56 .. changed trains here to a 2 car Hunter DMU departing 10.32.

The run from Hamilton to Maitland there are 4 lines and seen lots freight and coal trains .. counted the wagons on one coal train and had 84 wagons.

Maitland to Dungog is single line CTC working with crossing loops at Telarah, Mindaribba, Kilbride, Wallarobba and Dungog.

Arrive Dungog at 11.49 and here we crossed a south bound XPT train. Departed Dungog at 12:26 and followed the XPT south. The XPT was the only other train spotted along the single lines .. all the other crossing loops were empty.

Arrived back at Hamilton at 1.43 pm and changed to a 8 car double decker EMU back to Cardigg arriving 2.33.

Was a lovely day but also disappointing as I intended to take video clips of the journey to get pics of old farm buildings and some railway infrastructure to use with my projects.

But I forgot to delete old pics and videos from the storage drive on my tablet so never had the room for many video clips and only able to get a few still photos. I couldn't delete what was on storage device as I hadn't backed them up on computer yet. So will have to do that journey again soon.

Went train riding yesterday (April 28) catching a EMU from Cardiff to Hamilton, then a DMU Hamilton to High Street Station at Maitland.

My intentions was to do some train spotting and get photos of locos on fright and coal trains as there are a lot of private firms and a large range of different locos in use.

When I got off the train at High Street a train with a load of containers was going past .. to late to get photos. I walk 10 minutes to a road bridge where I wanted to be get more photos and before I got there a loaded coal train went through and I manage to get these pics. Shame I wasn't in time to get the locos as it was a triple header.

These coal wagons have the nickname "Batwings" ..

Which direction is the train going? Just look at the arrows on side of the wagons ... guess they put these arrows here so train crews knew where the front of the train is :D If it wasn't for those arrows would you have known which direction was front and the rear? :D These coal trains have at least 84 wagons.

The end of the train with a guard sitting on the back all red faced. (We nicknamed these guards "Blinky Bills" because their red faces keep blinking.
Coal Train_02.png
Coal Train_02.png (582.8 KiB) Viewed 3203 times
After I took these photos I waited an hour and no more freight or coal trains came through which is unusual as they usually regular with several an hour.

So I got back on the train for journey home and watching for trains from the window and seen none. Found out why as closed the line after that loaded coal went through to carry out track maintenance work near Thornton .. looks like they was getting ready to put in a new set of points (switches).

Is Coal traffic still rather big on the Australian Railways? I know in the UK that quite a lot of it is disappearing now, so it'd be interesting to know if the same was happening out there.

We export a lot of coal. Last week I spent an hour at a station and watched four loaded coal trains heading to Kooragang Island, Newcastle to unload. I didn't count the wagons on all the trains but they was very long.

The one I did count had 84 wagons. Years ago I counted one with 98 wagons, whether they still run that length that I not sure. The batwing coal wagons in those pics hold 78 tonnes coal and weight 22 tonnes when empty. Some videos I took last week take almost 5 minutes for the train to pass. The video clips I have to large to put on here as over 400MB in size.

Pic of the 84 wagon train I counted.
