I did not ride a train today but my bicycle down the old train track turned into a bicycle path.

So, given the fact that West Coast are running a regular, and free passenger train less than £25 away from me, I decided to go out for the day. Here are the journeys.

0826 Manchester Piccadilly to Preston on 350404. Weird going through Manchester Oxford Road non-stop, however, this appears to be the norm for TPE's Scotland services now, which is a bit weird in my opinion.
0953 Preston to Oxenholme Lake District on 390044.
1040 Oxenholme Lake District to Windermere, hauled by 57316. 33029 was idling on the rear, and I didn't move away from the window the whole trip. Happened to know the driver too, which was a touch bizarre! Only the second time I had been on a train driven by someone I knew (next up - Geo Ghost! )
1130 Windermere to Oxenholme Lake District, hauled by 33029.
1240 Oxenholme Lake District to Windermere, hauled by 57316.
1330 Windermere to Oxenholme Lake District, hauled by 33029.
1423 Oxenholme Lake District to Preston on 390151.

On arrival at Preston, I had intended to do, and even bought a ticket for, the Blackpool South line, on the 1510, formed of 142035 and 142054. However, this train got cancelled due to a lack of driver due to a Northern rostering error (according to my chats with the Conductor). Should at least get some good delay repay, as the next train was not for 2 hours! Instead, I ended up in the bar on Preston station, and travelled home on the:

1649 Preston to Manchester Piccadilly, formed of 350402 and 350408.

Double post - naughty me!

Went out yesterday to go see a move that I'd actually planned, first time I've ever managed to get a picture of one of my trains! Then ended up going to Liverpool to do a somewhat weird move that Virgin trains are doing in Passenger service at the moment due to the Lime Street blockade.

1026 Manchester Piccadilly to Preston on 350404 and 350408.
1217 Preston to Crewe on 221107. This service was delayed by about 15 mins at Preston, due to awaiting a member of train crew, which was somewhat useful for me, as the train I had been to see didn't leave until 1216!
1331 Crewe to Liverpool South Parkway on 350125.
1434 Liverpool South Parkway to Crewe on 390128. Due to the blockade of Lime Street, these services are terminating at South Parkway, and only one platform is able to take a Pendolino. As this platform is only signalled towards Liverpool, it results in Virgin services departing towards Liverpool, before reversing at signal AN4, before passing back through Liverpool South Parkway non-stop after the driver has walked through the train. This was also the first time where I had seen all 4 high level platforms at Liverpool South Parkway in use!
1609 Crewe to Preston on 390016.
1808 Preston to Manchester Piccadilly on 319363.

Are the reversals happening? It looks like RTT is getting confused!

15 minutes to swap ends is very generous.

Reminds me of a few years ago when East Coast (as was) ran a very strange service on an ECML Sunday when the Hertford Loop was out for the ERTMS/ETCS whatever it is stuff. Only the Down Fast was open between New Barnet and Ally Pally so up expresses were arriving, setting back off the Up Fast onto the Down Slow through some manually controlled points, then running wrong line.

I recall this happening but can’t remember the exact move - the slack was obscene though. I think it was 40 minutes for the whole event. Drivers were doing it in 10

Even if it ruins my entire budget i am ready to make long trips in train to get back and see my family in Italy. Now i've done an entire journey from Stockholm to Napoli, taking 6 different trains. And spent more than 400€ in it, just for that...
(at least i assume my stupidity)

They certainly are! Was weird leaving South Parkway on a London-bound train by heading towards Liverpool. The 15 minutes is indeed rather generous, think we turned around in about 10 mins, and part of that was waiting for a platform to clear at South Parkway so we could pass back through.

Barnham - Littlehampton Southern 377/4.

Little holiday to the south coast with the family, took the little one on a "big train" ride.

Back to work today, but I did have a long weekend travelling around the UK.

Friday 20th July
1015 Manchester Piccadilly to Milton Keynes Central on 390134. Got to see Virgin unveil their new Manchester-branded Pendolino, 390001, having renamed it to "Bee Together".
1212 Milton Keynes to Kensington Olympia on 377215 and 377210.
1329 Kensington Olympia to Clapham Junction on 378229.
1343 Clapham Junction to Barnes on 7070018 and 707026. First time on a 707, but not too dissimilar to a 700. Fortunately my journey was only a short hop.
1405 Barnes to Twickenham on 707025 and 707002.
1517 Twickenham to Brentford on 707014.
1553 Brentford to Feltham on 707002 and 707025.
1616 Feltham to Reading on 458512 and 458522. A busy pair of 458s on what can only be described as a long drag to Reading. The level crossing at Sunningdale was somewhat bizarre.
1905 Reading to London Paddington on 800010 and 800030. First time on an 800, purely on electric, my first impressions were the train was smart, and quiet, and it seemed to ride okay. The biggest issue was the seats were rock hard, but I expected that.
1941 London Paddington to Wembley Central on the Bakerloo Line
2008 Wembley Central to Milton Keynes Central on 377202 and 377212.

Saturday 21st July
0944 Milton Keynes Central to Crewe, The Crewe Open Day Special, hauled by 88005. Ran out via Kilsby Tunnel and the Trent Valley, nice run behind an 88 in First Class of a Mark 2. Crewe station was chaos with people trying to get a picture of the train as it arrived (and also departed later on). The Open Day itself was decent, good amount of locomotives there. There was also a bloke outside the depot handing out Leaflets from a group called "Close Capenhurst", who appear to be against Nuclear Power generation. Unfortunately for them, their leaflet appeared to be pure lies, with statements such as "The flasks leak highly radioactive materials as they pass through stations", despite tests to the contrary.
1535 Crewe to Milton Keynes Central, The Crewe Open Day Special, hauled by 68016. Ran via Chester, Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Portobello Jn, Walsall, Sutton Park, Nuneaton, Rugby and Northampton. Covered a route I had yet to travel over (namely, Sutton Park) and doubled my Class 68 haulage mileage. We had a heavy brake application not far out of Shrewsbury, and ended up sat for 10-15 minutes whilst the fault was rectified, but had made time back by Wolverhampton.

Sunday 22nd July
0906 Milton Keynes Central to Manchester Piccadilly on 390112.
1117 Manchester Piccadilly to Huddersfield on 185129.
1200 Huddersfield to Leeds on 185103. Stopped at HUD to get the West Yorks Day Ranger, after the conductor of our previous train hadn't come through. This resulted in us actually getting to Leeds earlier than the last train would have got us there, as we overtook it at Dewsbury.
1305 Leeds to Wakefield Westgate, pushed by 90036. Nice to have a 90 in, as I haven't had one for haulage in over 10 years.
1340 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds on 150128
1434 Leeds to Wakefield Westgate, powered by 43054 and 43058. EMT set going to St Pancras.
1511 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds, powered by 43251 and 43305.
1542 Leeds to Wakefield Westgate on 142070.
1608 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds, hauled by 91105.
1645 Leeds to Wakefield Westgate, pushed by 91117.
1715 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds, hauled by 91121.
1747 Leeds to Wakefield Westgate, powered by 43061 and 43075. EMT power cars with a VTEC rake of Mark 3s.
1801 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds, powered by 43060 and 43050. This service was roughly 2 minutes late into Wakefield due to delays on it's run from Sheffield, which allowed us the opportunity to change between the two HSTs.
1834 Leeds to Manchester Victoria on 185145. The last 185 that I ever needed for travelling, finally travelled on! I've now travelled on the entire (current) TPE fleet, which I won't be able to say for long, as soon the Mark 5s enter service. Hit a length of pipe between Stalybridge and Ashton-under-Lyne, made quite the racket.

Even worse being stuck there in a car during the morning peak!

Enjoy Barnham? I prefer Basingstoke myself. Or Exeter St. Davids.

Have been places, most recently up and down the Mid Hants railway, where 925 Cheltenham was running.

Salisbury - Bristol Temple Meads on GWR 158/9 followed by Bristol TM - Newton Abbot on Crosscountry 220.

Was supposed to change at Westbury onto a GWR HST on a Paddington - Paignton service, however this service broke down near Theale so we’re instructed to stay aboad and change at Bristol. The 220 arrived already full and then 300 passengers tried to get aboard. Of course, I, along with almost everyone else stood crammed together in the aisles and vestibules all the way to Exeter 85 minutes later. Not fun. No wonder I drive down rather than take the train when I can...

Errr was just changing trains there, spent all of 6 minutes on the station.

I've spent longer, usually waiting for a train up the Arun Valley line after getting off an FGW train. The first time was sharing the platform with a bloke who was on his way to a football match, and already hammered. I *think* he might have been supporting Crystal Palace...

However, now I know there is a bookshop on the island platform.

Ever use the SWR service? I use them interchangably. Also gone via Bristol a couple of times, just for the scenery. On those occasions CC managed to produce an HST thouugh so you have my sympathies.. Some of those Voyagers start out in Aberdeen so I'm told.

London-Blackpool

Blackpool-Newcastle via the Tyne Valley...

A pair of return trips on the T&W Metro

Newcastle-London

I was surprised that the cross country route was quickest via Carlisle, but it seems the connections via Manchester were just too tight - even though the route would be quicker if connections were more convenient.

In any case, they’d have been rammed because TPE. So a rattle down the Tyne Valley it was. And it was gloriously bleak.

So, since my last post in here, I've done a couple of trips out to pick up some lines I haven't travelled on before. These are the results. Trains listed in Italics are those with new trackage on.

Saturday 28th July
0942 Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield on 158770. A single 158 on a service that usually has a pair resulted in this service being rather busy.
1159 Sheffield to York on 142016, via Rotherham Central and Pontefract Baghill. I was amazed how busy this service was given it is a fairly irregular service. It was race day at York however on the day.
1345 York to Burton-on-Trent, on 221139 via Leeds, Sheffield, Toton Centre and Castle Donnington. Due to ongoing engineering works at Derby, CrossCountry services are being diverted via what is usually a freight route. On this service, I had a table to myself between York and Leeds, and again between Sheffield and Burton, which is rarity with XC.
1631 Burton-on-Trent to Sheffield, powered by 43285 and 43366. Again, routed via Castle Donnington and Toton Centre, was nice to get an XC HST in, was a rather pleasant experience.
1811 Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly on 185136.

Saturday 11th August
1027 Rochdale to Manchester Victoria on 150275.
1109 Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Oxford Road on 142062 and 142041, a short hop to get a pair of 142s I hadn't travelled on before in.
1129 Manchester Oxford Road to Liverpool Lime Street on 319366. The stopper between Manchester and Liverpool, this train dragged.
1243 Liverpool Lime Street (Low Level) to Liverpool James Street on 508120.
1254 Liverpool James Street to Liverpool Moorfields (Deep level) on 507011.
1305 Liverpool Moorfield (Northern) to Ormskirk on 507033.
1401 Ormskirk to Preston on 150222. Was a pleasant surprise when a refurbed 150 turned up on this service, was expecting a pacer.
1517 Preston to Wigan North Western on 390148.
1621 Wigan North Western to Liverpool Lime Street on 319450. After arriving at Wigan, I found the 1550 Semi-Fast to Liverpool cancelled, so walked to P6 to get the 1551 stopper instead, this too ended up being cancelled due to a lack of guard, so ended up having to wait for the 1621 to turn up. Got rewarded by an Old First Class seat though!
1759 Liverpool Lime Street to Wigan North Western on 319375, via Newton-le-Willows and the Lowton Curve. A once a day train to keep route knowledge on the curve.
1923 Wigan North Western to Manchester Piccadilly on 319362.

Saturday 18th August
0830 Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe on 175116.
0953 Crewe to Chester on 221116. Diverted via Middlewich due to engineering works on the main route, this added about an hour to the schedule, and was a bit of a drag, but Middlewich is usually freight only, so was worth doing!
1145 Chester to Liverpool Lime Street (Low Level) on 508124.
1234 Liverpool Lime Street to Winsford on 350231. Wanted a run past Edge Hill to see if one of Northern's new units was there, and got to see the 331 that is there at the moment.
1407 Winsford to Crewe on 350371
1430 Crewe to Wilmslow on 175009
1452 Wilmslow to Manchester Piccadilly on 323234, via Stockport.

Saturday 25th August
0827 Manchester Piccadilly to Birmingham New Street on 220001, out via the usual route via Macclesfield, Stoke and Wolverhampton.
1014 Birmingham New Street to Bromsgrove on 323204.
1112 Bromsgrove to Droitwich Spa on 170506 and 170514.
1130 Droitwich Spa to Worcester Shrub Hill on 172218 and 172216
1141 Worcester Shrub Hill to Worcester Foregate Street on 800022
1206 Worcester Foregate Street to Reading on 800022, via Evesham and the Didcot Avoider. My first longer distance journey on an 800, and first on diesel too. I was rather impressed by them to be fair. My main issue is that the seats are rock hard, and they seem to ride extremely roughly and loudly on the higher speed corners.
1358 Reading to Didcot Parkway on 800031 and 800028
1431 Didcot Parkway to Oxford on 165108. Sat in First Class, as it was declassified on this service.
1523 Oxford to Worcester Foregate Street on 800036.
1647 Worcester Foregate Street to Droitwich Spa on 172335. It was an Orange and Purple 172, so thought I'd get it the one stop.
1733 Droitwich Spa to Birmingham New Street on 170514 and 170506, via Bromsgrove and Selly Oak.
1815 Birmingham New Street to Crewe on 390127.
1930 Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly on 175101.

22/08/2018, Moscow Paveletsky to Saratov-1 in on the train 009G "Saratov", hell if I remember the name of the company owning the train though, it's not a regular RZhD one.

Departure at 18:13 local time from Paveletsky station, arrival at 09:29 local time in Saratov.

Interestingly enough, Russian trains are always, ALWAYS on time : if it's written "09:29" on your ticket, you can order a taxi at 09:31 in front of the train station and you aren't going to be charged because the driver's waiting. Meanwhile, MOST French trains I had the "pleasure" to ride were late by more than 10 minutes on 90 minute rides.

So, done a little bit of travel again this month, again, as above, trains with new trackage on are in italics.

Friday 7th September
0939 Warwick Parkway to Leamington Spa on 168111 and 168322. 168322 has changed a lot since I last travelled on it, back when it was 170302.
0958 Leamington Spa to Birmingham Moor Street, hauled by 68013. I do like the Chiltern loco-hauled sets.
1049 Birmingham Moor Street to Stourbridge Junction on 172214 and 172215.
1135 Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town on 139001. The last 139 I needed for travelling on, whilst the shed doors were open so the other could be seen in there, first time I've ever seen both at the same time.
1140 Stourbridge Town to Stourbridge Junction on 139001.
1159 Stourbridge Junction to Kidderminster on 172218 and 172212.
1219 Kidderminster to Worcester Shrub Hill on 172334. Just after we boarded this train, a car decided it wanted to hit the level crossing gates at Rowley Regis, causing lenghty delays on the entire line, I was lucky enough to get through!
1247 Worcester Shrub Hill to Malvern Link, powered by 43144 and 43186
1313 Malvern Link to Bromsgrove on 170514. This service ended up behind units that were meant to be going via Rowley Regis, however, were now not able to. This caused a delay of around 20 minutes to this train, whilst a decision was made whether to divert the train ahead via Bromsgrove or not, it eventually was diverted.
1412 Bromsgrove to University on 323211. I must say, the 323 coped with the Incline at Lickey brilliantly.
1439 Unversity to Tamworth on 170105.
1520 Tamworth to Nuneaton on 350106.
1614 Nuneaton to Coventry on 153354.
1736 Coventry to Leamington Spa on 153334.
1741 Leamington Spa to Birmingham New Street on 168005. Due to an Emergency Speed Restriction implemented in the Haddenham & Thame Parkway area, all northbound Chiltern trains were delayed. This meant that the 68 hauled set I had been aiming to catch to Smethwick Galton Bridge was stuck in Bicester, so the 168 was boarded instead.
1901 Birmingham New Street to Stafford on 350247. Decided to have an hour or so at Stafford, seeing some of the many freights that pass through later in the evening
2104 Stafford to Manchester Piccadilly on 390045. This ran back via Crewe and Styal.

Saturday 8th September
0955 Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe on 390153.
1046 Crewe to Runcorn on 390039.
1122 Runcorn to Liverpool South Parkway on 350232. Decided to stop at LSP to get a pic of the Northern Belle coming from Manchester.
1153 Liverpool South Parkway to Liverpool Lime Street on 156489 and 156421.
1213 Liverpool Lime Street to Liverpool Central on 507011, decided to do some bashing on the Merseyrail units, as they are due to be withdrawn soon when the new Stadler-built Units arrive.
1220 Liverpool Central to Liverpool James Street on 507033.
1224 Liverpool James Street to Hamilton Square on 507008.
1230 Hamilton Square to Birkenhead North on 507010.
1249 Birkenhead North to Hamilton Square on 507020.
1301 Hamilton Square to Bidston on 508127. Got this train via the full Loop under Liverpool.
1332 Bidston to Shotton on 150237. Went for some Lunch in Wetherspoons, classy me!
1455 Shotton to Wrexham Central on 150250.
1530 Wrexham Central to Wrexham General on 150250.
1606 Wrexham General to Chester on 175109.
1655 Chester to Crewe on 150279. A4 Union of South Africa was at Chester, so the station was rather busy.
1720 Crewe to Whitchurch (Shropshire) on 153323. Wanted a run past the depot at Gresty Bridge to see if there was much interesting on there. There wasn't.
1808 Whitchurch (Shropshire) to Crewe on 158830.
1847 Crewe to Liverpool Lime Street on 390118.
1952 Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Piccadilly on 158773 and 158783. This was the East Midlands Trains service, and ran via Warrington Central, had been a while since I did that route, so was nice to go over there again.

Friday 14th September
0626 Manchester Piccadilly to Lancaster on 350405.
0736 Lancaster to Barrow-in-Furness on 156471.
0918 Barrow-in-Furness to Carlisle, powered by 68005 and 68033.
1247 Carlisle to Newcastle Central on 156480. This service was 17 minutes late leaving Carlisle, as Northern decided to do a unit swap with a set coming off the Cumbrian Coast. If this set had been on-time, it would have arriving at Carlisle roughly 3 mins after the Newcastle was due to leave, however, it was delayed and arrived roughly 12 minutes after the Newcastle set should have left. They then had to uncouple the two sets that had arrived, as only the one was going to Newcastle, further adding to the delay. All whilst another 156, sat in Platform 2 having arrived from Newcastle (and, looking at it's usual platform allocation, meant to go back!), was getting ready to go to Lancaster. Bit of a weird decision, but idk the reasoning behind it.
1441 Newcastle Central to Thornaby on 142071, running via the Durham Coast. This train kept losing time due to a large amount of passengers in wheelchairs requiring the ramp. I think there was 5 on the journey, which is a lot for a single pacer to carry!
1602 Thornaby to York on 185113 and 185108.
1711 York to Leeds on 170459, running via Harrogate. This unit still had full Scotrail branding on it, and was a pleasant surprise from the Pacer I was expecting.
1836 Leeds to Manchester Victoria on 158758, running via Bradford Interchange.

All in all, this day cost me £30, including my bus fare home, as I had two free Northern Singles as delay repay compensation, which I used from Lancaster to Thornaby, and then from York to Manchester Victoria, got 317 miles out them!

Monday 17th September
1139 Rochdale to Wigan Wallgate on 150206 and 142094, running via Atherton.
1245 Wigan Wallgate to Blackpool North on 390128.
1332 Blackpool North to Poulton-le-Fylde on 319386.
1345 Poulton-le-Fylde to Preston on 319376. Whilst at Preston, I was able to see the Class 195 test run (pic attached below).
1447 Preston to Blackburn on 158850.
1554 Blackburn to Cherry Tree on 142079.
1618 Cherry Tree to Blackburn on 142036.
1648 Blackburn to Rochdale on 153331 and 153363, running via Darwen. It's weird that you can now get to Rochdale in 2 directions from Blackburn! Was also the first time I'd ever used the new(ish), west-facing bay at Rochdale.

Would it be quicker to hook a bunch of units together if they are ging in the same direction one wonders? That way you only use one path or slot or whatever the term is ....

Last lengthy train journey was way back on 11 August, SWRs' summer Saturday service from Basingstoke to Corfe Castle via Salisbury, Yeovil, Weymouth which I boarded at Salisbury. It was a spur of the moment thing owing to a strike having been called off during the week . The train arrived about 0720 - ish, composed of three 159 units coming in from Basingstoke, which then shed the last set. The journey to Yeovil included some long waits including at Templecombe, which was where we were informed the trein would only be going as far as Weymouth as the driver for the last part of the journey could not be found. Arriving at Yeovil Junction, we were then told we would be continuing to Corfe Castle as planned.

The train reversed down the connecting line to Yeovil Pen Mill, where there was jointed track and semaphores, as well as stacks of steel sleepers. After another reverse it set out again to Weymouth. Here the rearmost unit, the refurbished 159 007 in boiled sweet livery was detached for the run to Wareham, where it reversed again to go onto the Swanage Railway. It arrived on the down platform at Corfe Castle, and I transferred onto a Swanage- bound train behind an SR U class 2-6-0.

Returned to Corfe Castle behind a BR Ivatt tank, Found 159 007 where it was left, although it may have done an intermediate journey in the meantime. The train crossed over to the up platform for its’ stop at Wareham, before continuing back to Weymouth on the down line. From there the journey proceeded pretty much in reverse.

Will hopefully be doing the Amberley bus running day this weekend .
