Cumbernauld started off as a small through station for the Welwyn - Sheffield Loco hauled service, and as an interchange for the Muni trams, but as time went on, it evolved into the biggest station on the map, serving as a major interchange point, handling 1000s of passengers an hour, with a large mix of both high speed, express, stopping, and metro wessex's coming in. The focus of the image being a new bought class 159 to replace the loss making 'dubbel decker' capacity stopping services previously on the line. Here seen is the magnitude of cumbernauld junction, a major project to stop blockages on the line and allow more trains to run through, on time as well. The depot on the north east end is due to be replaced by a new Traction maintenance depot, like the type seen at Chester and Dartford, due to be used by more than just Pendolinos, to ensure on time trains, and top quality condition for unfortunately squashed passengers on most high speed and express services.
