Overdue for some new Irish action. Time for a lovely branch line trip south of Cork by DMU in the 1970s. We arrived from Dublin by main line train, took a tram across the city and joined our train at Cork Albert station...

The second half of our branch line rover trip...

File comment: Heading back to Bantry Junction, we then take the other spur, weaving through rocky countryside to reach the small village of Bantry. Time for another Murphy's then back to Cork!

Jump forward to the 1990s. The Irish economy is expanding confidently and CIE have introduced new air conditioned Derby built stock. That's if the aircon still works of course. Still, you can always get a can of chilled Guinness from the buffet...

My system is now much bigger than prototypical, but it is not yet overcrowded. Having reasonably small cities definitely helps with cargodist. No sign of electrification yet, though, though the Vulcans will need replacing soon...

File comment: Two vulcans pass on the Limerick-Nenagh line. A new Limerick-Athlone service via this route is very commercially successful.

File comment: At Tralee, which we visited earlier, there has been considerable expansion following the introduction of services from Limerick, to the north. A Slammer working from Limerick approaches the station.

Yup, its Iron Horse. Fantastic British style set, doesn't have the limitations of UKRS.

Really singing Iron Horse's praises here - the Tin Rocket DMU simulates the advantages of modern DMUs perfectly, with a 100mph top speed. Its made Sprinterisation possible for me on lines where loco haulage was losing money. Sticking to locos on my main routes, of course!

Attachments:
File comment: The cargo flow map for passengers - things are pretty smooth, and the Tin Rockets have cleared up branch line congestion.

File comment: A tin rocket approaches the outpost of Ballina, on a line where sprinterisation has meant frequencies can be increased.

File comment: The Cork-Tralee line had long been running over capacity with Vulcans. Two Tin Rockets cross while a narrow gauge Walker diesel passes overhead with bauxite empties.

Meanwhile it's been time to start a new game to make use of the impressive SBB set...in the Central European Republic of Alpenland, famed for its precision timekeeping, chocolates and permissive corporate governance regulations. Early years yet. Its 1912 and the railways have linked the banking capital of St. Gallen to the commercial capital, Merzligen, but the next challenge will be to reach the outlying cantons over the mountains.

Attachments:
File comment: An A3/5 hauled express for Merzligen leaves St. Gallen while local trains head off round the lake.

File comment: At the other end of the main line, a busy scene at Merzligen. Regional services hauled by EB3/5 Habersacks and B3/4 locomotives connect here.
