Some shots from a 256x124 map played with the new French Narrow Gauge GRF - excellent so far! The slowness of the locos presents quite a challenge, though somewhat offset by the cheapness of expansion. And building through cities is indeed possible.

Expansion continues apace, with narrow gauge track delivering a very high metres per Franc ratio.

Nice to see the first screenshots of Snail's set in action. Do you intent to keep your lines strictly single track? With default daylength and locomotives that slow, I'd wager it could be quite the challenge to keep up with demand once freight trains become part of the equation. I do like to use shunting engines (BR Class 08, road-rail Unimogs, 600mm narrow gauge set) for local freight, but an entire network at 40-50 kph as well as relatively low capacities per wagon is something else entirely!

Nice ! Do you invent the town names or you have a specific NewGRF ?

Thanks. I've been keeping to single track if possible, but it has been necessary to double in places. Its great to play a set that you actually have to think about, and is financially challenging to use (I am only making about a 30% profit margin and am far from the usual unstoppable riches). Longer lines, I have found, hardly pay at all, and with cargodist, a larger network actually seems to simply lower profit margins. You have to think about your consists - 1st class carriages are a must, but don't work with the recently introduced 34mph loco which seems grande vitesse compared with the 23 and 28mph locos I have had so far! Quite a bit of passenger demand in some places, but I have turned off town road building now in case city sizes get out of hand. I have only got passenger going at the moment because I didn't place any industries (I enjoy coping with their random placings), but the game seems to have placed industry slower than usual, and I am hoping for a coal mine or something similar to appear as it should change my finances radically!

@Acs121 I am using the Small French town names newGRF.

There is no doubt Snail has produced something very special here.

1898 and the little railway is now prospering somewhat, with a dense network of lines across the island.

I didn't see those screenshots before (I missed them, sorry... :( ) but I really love the way you build local railways like the ones proposed with Snail's set. It really looks realistic, especially with the "steamtram" you made. I'd call it "town tramway" but they were very common in France and Western Europe back in the 19th century. I also know there were a lot of them in the UK too, and they often connected a station far from the town itself to the town center. There still are lines like this today, the only example I can find though is the line from Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town.

Thanks, yeah I need to play that French game on into the 20th century when things get more funky, but I got waylaid with lots of other exciting newGRFs like Iron Horse 2 and RUKTS. The British didn't really build too many vicinal lines on the continental model (though there were some mainline branches into towns like Stourbridge, another I think is Wrexham), but yeah, I was using the tram locos to try and build very local lines as I know existed in France and Belgium together with longer narrow gauge lines similar to the Reseau Breton etc. A fascinating period of transport history indeed!

1987...A pacer approaches Fendhattan while an HST and Thumper DEMU, soon to be replaced by a Pacer itself, head out the other direction.
