The high speed tracks to Sommerda don't run directly into the city, connecting to the mainline by means of a Flying Junction at Schwarzenbach an der Saale. Trains coming off the high speed line take priority over those on the mainline, so a late running Intercity service is held at the junction to let us pass.

Our final stop before our destination is Großbottwar, an 8 platform station, located a fair distance away from the city it serves. We quickly stop to set down passengers only in Platform 4, before departing on-time for the final stretch.

Soon, we reach Merkendorf, a suburb of Sommerda. We pass through on the fast lines at 230km/h, whilst a local train approaches Merkendorf Valley on the slows. S-Bahns also link Merkendorf with Sommerda city centre directly.

And finally, after our 5 hour 17 minute journey from Löffingen, we reach Sommerda Königs Kreuz, and remarkably, get a clear run into a platform, a rarity here due to congestion. Wheels stop in Platform 6 at 19:17:47, bringing to an end our journey, just 47 seconds late. The passengers head to their various homes and hotels, and a few to the bars, whilst others have connections to make here.

Again, it's been a long time again - This is the same game still, and I'm going to try another Journey diary style thing.

Herr Steele's Journey Diary
Vöhringen Kemnath Airport to Edenkoben
Herr Steele is in the Steel business, and has a meeting at Edenkoben Steel Mill tomorrow. Based in mainland Germany, has has to fly in, and, in order to reduce costs for his new company, takes the cheaper flight and train option. He arrives into Vöhringen Kemnath Airport on a Eurowings flight, where our journey begins, and boards an S1 Inner Circle service towards Kemnath. Here, we can see his train in Platform 1, as the plane that brought him here takes off with Flight 2103 to Calbe and Air Berlin Flight 1704 to Forchtenberg taxi's to the runway.

Our S1 train doesn't run directly to the station that we need to get to, so we have to change onto an S3 service from Kemnath Central, having used a Deutsche Verkehrsbetriebe bus that links the two stations in the town. On our departure, we pass the main depot for S-Bahn trains in Vöhringen, and a FedEx run Mail train drops down on the slow speed link from the Circle line.

Having stopped at Wachenheim (not pictured), we soon arrive at Vöhringen Nordbahnhof Low Level. The High Level is used by many local and intercity services, and links directly to the Hauptbahnhof by means of a bridge through the city centre.

We call at the little used Vöhringen Eidelstedt station next, before we arrive at Vöhringen Rissen where we get off the S-Bahn to await our next service, the 13:13 RegioJet service to Nidda, which today is running a couple of minutes late on the inbound run, and is expected to depart at 13:15. Whilst we wait, we are able to see the departure of one of the ICE services that runs from here to Calbe, and also an Intercity service run by a Railjet, arrive from, and depart to Leverkusen. This station was built in order to relieve some of the stress from the increasingly busy Hauptbahnhof.

We soon find ourselves passing the mess of Junctions and Roads associated with the approaches to Rissen, and the Sawmill at Lenzen, which we are able to pass through at 160km/h with ease on this occasion. Whilst the company only paid for Herr Steele to travel in standard class, he has paid a 30 Euro upgrade fee, and is now travelling in First Class, sat in the second to last carriage of our 8 carriage train.

Soon, we reach the trains top speed of 200km/h, limited by the carriages used (the track is cleared for 230km/h), and rattle through Joachimstahl Parkway, a station built at the same time as Vöhringen to serve a very similar purpose. Being located out of town, a frequent bus service links it with the town centre. Here we pass a National Express stopping service as it accelerates away.

After a run at speed on a straight section of track, we slow for the crossovers at Wipperfürth, where we use the tracks avoiding the platform, before slowing even further for the curve into Geseke, where we pass through non-stop, before reaching Großalmerode, where again we do not call. When this section of track was built in the 1860s, it's Geography proved problematic, and many trains had to use banking locomotives to get up the grade between Geseke and Wipperfürth. Fortunately, nowadays, modern trains can make it up the hill with ease.

We begin to slow for our first call at Zweibrücken, a major city relatively isolated from the rest of the island, with it's main form of transport being the many trains that do stop here. We arrive into Platform 3 as another RegioJet service to Bad Schwartau prepares to leave Platform 4, and a National Express NEX6 train departs Platform 2 towards Vohringen Rissen.
8, Zweibrucken.png

On departure from Zweibrücken, we pass through Erbendorf non-stop, and then the tracks split into 4 at Heinsberg, where again, we pass non-stop, before reaching the mess of flying junctions at Burscheid. Built in 1967 in an attempt to increase capacity, the junctions are seen as a mess now, and a full rebuild is being planned, although the impact on train services from such is expected to be significant.

Having passed Gräfenthal non-stop, we begin to slow for our next call at Baunach. Despite only being a small town, it's also quite a major financial hub, so lots of express services stop here, whilst others go through non-stop, either on the platform, or using the bi-directional through track. Lots of freight also passes through, and two such trains can be seen about to pass each other, whilst a National Express service arrives into Platform 2, from where it will crossover to the slow lines and follow the freight train. A Gelsenkirchen-bound Regional train is also seen arriving into Platform 3.
10, Baunach.png
(1.06 MiB) Not downloaded yet
We use the fast lines from Baunach, which take a different alignment to the slows, missing Weilheim in Oberbayern and Bad Vibel before we arrive into the busy station in the city of Rotenburg. Platform space is at a premium here, and 4 out of the 6 platforms are seen occupied, with one having just been vacated by the Bad Schwartau service we have been following, and another about to be occupied by a local service, whilst our train calls in Platform 4. Platform 6 is occupied by a National Express service formed of two express diesel units, one of just a handful of diesel ran services on the island.

The next stop for a lot of trains from Rotenburg is Bad Krozingen, having watched the busier line towards Gelsenkirchen go off. Here, we will stop following the Bad Schwartau train (which would have gone down the line to the bottom of the picture), and instead take the direct route to Nidda. But first a late-running local service from Gelsenkirchen to Nidda will be let out of Platform 4 ahead of us. Hopefully it doesn't delay us too much!

We come to halt just outside of Olbernhau station, one we are not meant to stop at. Looks like we're going to be late!

Following the local service, we again come to a halt outside of the stations of Mühlberg, Vechta and Ludwigslust. There is limited capacity to overtake another train on this route, and soon we are running around 15 minutes late on arrival at Thale, our next stop, and somewhere we can finally overtake that stopping service! The signaller holds the stopper in the platform, allowing us to depart first, hopefully we can still make our connection!

Soon, we're running along the shore of Lake Thale and the driver is doing everything he can in order to try and gain back some time. We swing inland near the town of Hanau, a small town served by a separate loop off the mainline, which sees just one train every 4 hours during the day. We instead pass through the station at Schorndorf, a little quicker than normal, with Herr Steele's GPS Speedometer on his phone clocking the train at nearly 200km/h on track where the line speed is only 180km/h! We will soon be climbing into the hills however, so maybe that extra speed will come in handy!*
15, Hanau.png
(1.22 MiB) Not downloaded yet
*The train never exceeded 180km/h in this, 'tis just an addition for the story, I would hope no train driver would feel the need to speed in order to try and make some time back!

We pass through the towns of Ketzenelnbogen, Hemmoor and Renchen before reaching our next stop at the lakeside holiday resort of Neukirchen. The town is incredibly popular with families, as well as students, being an affordable holiday destination with regular train services.

We pass through Leun, before passing one of the trains that serves Hanau at Parsberg. These services are run by 6-car trains built by Bombardier to their Electrostar design - just with a different bodyshell to the UK market.

We approach Nidda, our trains final stop, 12 minutes late, just in time.... to watch our next train depart! We have a 45 minute wait here for the next one, which means we will likely miss our next train too! Despite the size of the station, Nidda is actually not very well served. There has been talk about downsizing the station, however each time this is blocked by local residents who instead want to see an increase in the number of services.

The reason for the next service we want having a weird frequency (3 trains every 2 hours) is because of the long single line sections, which don't lend themselves well to increasing services. We stop at Waiblingen on one of these single line sections. A rural town, the station building is actually the biggest building there.

After 20 minutes, of which 10 minutes was sat in the loop waiting for the train the opposite way to pass, we reach the once popular town of Zeitz, which was a retreat for the rich and famous, who normally arrived here by helicopter, landing in the fields nearby. The discovery of Oil in the sea nearby in 2007 meant an Oil Rig being built here, much to the dismay of the local population. A Campaign was started to stop the construction, however, did not get enough support and the Oil Rig was built anyway.

We arrive into Berka, the final stop for this service, where we have a 20 minute wait for our next train, which arrives into Platform 2. Like our last train, this too is of the FLIRT design built by Stadler, however has a fourth carriage, as our next route is busier. Berka itself is expected to become a busier station when the new line to Klingenberg is completed, however, this is a long way off yet, being put on hold following the financial crash and beginning of a recession.

The station at Altensteig, our next stop, is located on top of a steep hill, above the town. The town has built many roads here, expecting expansion, however, the recession has led to many of the plots lying empty.

We call at Eutin, a relatively uninteresting station next, before arriving at the final stop on this service, Eberbach, where again, we arrive just in time to watch our next train depart! That delay earlier really has screwed us up, and we are now reliant on the last express train of the day. We could get an earlier stopping service, however, this would arrive later at Edenkoben. Herr Steele goes for his evening meal at a local restaurant, and makes his way back into the station with 10 minutes to spare before departure. The displays have the train up as "Cancelled" - not good for Herr Steele! He goes to the DB Info Desk at the station and asks the question - they assure him the train is still running, and the boards are just malfunctioning - sure enough, with 4 minutes to go until departure, the train squeals into the station and Herr Steele can breathe a sigh of relief! He again pays to upgrade on this service, costing him 25 Euro out of his own pocket, at least he will be relaxed!
23, Eberbach.png

The first stop out of Eberbach is Rheinböllen, a fairly unremarkable station. There is a diesel freight-only curve of track here - this used to allow freight trains to run towards Eutin without having to reverse at Eberbach, but most of this traffic has since ceased to run.

We pass on the through lines through the stations at Großenehrich and Wassertrüdingen, before slowing for our next call at Vetschau. This station is also expected to become busier in the future, as it too is going to be linked with Klingenberg, but the line is currently delayed. For now, the 5 platform station is overkill, even at the busiest of times. On our departure, we will pass on the through lines past the nearby town of Bönnigheim, which surprisingly is not link to Vetschau directly by Road.

We pass through Giengen an der Brenz, before approaching Bramsche, another town where we will pass through non-stop. Local legend has this town as haunted by a three headed woman, who had each head chopped off via Guillotine at the same time in the 1600s - she is said to appear on the railway station after the last stopping service has departed (the train ahead of ours), with a candle in one hand, and the other pointed at passengers on the train. Our businessman, Herr Steele believes in the supernatural, and believes he catches a glimpse of her. He's quite glad the train is going through at 180km/h and soon rattles onto the viaduct over the nearby river.

The train passes through Moers, before reaching the unremarkable town of Brühl. A little construction has occured here recently, with the new road linking it to the town of Plochingen having just opened that very day. A bus is expected to link the two towns eventually, but that has yet to be confirmed.

At speed, we soon reach Schlitz, another station we don't call at. Just after the station, we pass the vast yards associated with the sawmill there. These are empty however, following a collapse of most of the local logging industry, these yards only see at most one train per day. There is a campaign to introduce more logging into the area, however, local environmental groups are against it, leaving the Schlitz Sawmill site's future up in the air.

The next town we reach is Ludwigshafen am Rhein, where we overtake the stopping service that left Eberbach a full 30 minutes before us - Herr Steele made the right choice in waiting longer, and is also well fed too!

At 00:15, Herr Steele's train arrives into Edenkoben, an hour later than he had originally planned. The station at Edenkoben is far too small for the amount of services it receives nowadays, however it's location in the heart of a bustling city makes it difficult to expand. Edenkoben itself was once a city reliant on the steelworks, which can be seen in the lower right corner of the picture, however, following the collapse of this industry which saw the steel mill downsize significantly (the Airport and it's Car Parks are built on former steel mill land), the city had to diversify, and is now the fastest growing city on the island in terms of economy, whilst also having a popular nightlife scene, which Herr Steele may try out after his meeting tomorrow if all goes to plan! For now though, it's off to the hotel for some well earned rest.

Its stations are really beautiful !
