OK here we go:

Our journey starts when we hop off the train in Steinbrucken. We board the ski bus and head up to the slopes!

Sonderhorst is the first stop. Although a small village with a small ski area, it's perfect for half a day's skiing to warm up for the season and to get a good night's sleep. The short chairlift ride takes you to a sweeping green run, a short blue run and a mogul slope to warm up those legs.

Naumfeld is our main destination for a week's skiing. The chairlift from the village provides similar terrain to Sonderhorst - a sweeping green run and some moguls. The main ski area can be found when we board the gondola...

A larger screenshot shows the extend of the ski area from the top of the gondola. Three easily accessible chairlifts provide access to terrain for all difficulty levels. If the slopes don't quite finish you off, a long narrow green run leaves the top of the screen to take you down to the village below.

Well, after our week's skiing in Naumfeld we head off to find new thrills in the Holzberg ski area. Here's a map to show our journey:
Sonderhorst Transport, 3rd Apr 1988.png

So we are travelling from A (Naumfeld) to D (Holzberg) via a flight from B (Salzbrucken Airport) to C (Kelstadt Airport). To do this, we need to take a bus back down to Steinbrucken before taking a train back along the shores of Lake Querhorst before making a connection to the airport.

So we jump off our ski bus and board a mainline train at Steinbrucken main station:

Here we can see our train speeding through one of the Lake's shoreline towns, Anderburg.

Now we reach the city of Querhorst where we must change trains.

Our regional train departs in the same direction before diverging a short while later. While this train will travel the northern shoreline of Lake Querhorst, we only require a few stops before we alight for the airport bus.

We arrive at Salzbrucken Airport in plenty of time for our short flight. The number of randomly driving fire engines that decided to arrive at the same time should be no cause of concern!

Here we are about to touch down at Kelstadt Airport. Here we board another airport shuttle to begin our train journey up into the mountains once more.

Dusselmunster, the last major town before the ski villages, is our destination to board the ski train up to Langenbruck.

Our progress can now be followed on the piste map. We travel past the Holzberg Gondola - the only way of accessing the car-free town other than the Alphubelbahn. Being the train enthusiast we are, we decide to take the Alphubelbahn instead.

Langenbruck is the foot of the ski hill. Whilst we could stay here (for considerably cheaper too!) we would rather get the full mountain experience up in Holzberg. For this, we must cross the road from the main station and board the waiting Alphubelbahn train. First stop - Holzberg!

After a journey of many connections, we finally arrive in Holzberg. The ski resort, with no car access, is the foot of many lifts and pistes. All of which will need to be examined from tomorrow - the first day of the second week skiing!

Everything is really awesome, but the last picture fails to give its impression.... First, because of the let's-build-a-house-on-the-slope-and-put-a-mountain of foundations-underneath-instead-of-building-in-the-plain-like-normal-people, and second, because of that huge panel block, making no sense in a mountain village without roads....

I do agree with you to some extent. However, you do get some resorts that are purpose built, concrete jungles which do have similar looking buildings.

Ok so here we have the overall ski area without the piste map lines on:

and a few shots that I like:

...the summit station on the line. From here, two chairlifts serve very difficult skiing terrain including the treacherous bowl of moguls. Or, you can take a nice long green run back to both villages.

Our journey begins in Schlieren, a town in the valley south-east of Zulichen ski area. Historically the line ran up through Schlieren, tunneling though the mountain range at a higher elevation before running down through the slopes of the ski area. More recently, however, a basistunnel has been built to direct heavier traffic through the mountain away from the villages and the steeper, rack assisted line. The old mountain route was then continued by the SLZ (Schlieren-Lotscher-Zulichen-Bahn) company to run ski trains.

Here we can see an Adventure Express train plunging into the basistunnel. We will board the SLZ train in the town's historic station to climb up the Lotscher valley.

After the short climb up the Lotscher valley we enter the tunnel that takes us deep through the mountain and out onto a piste map and the Zulichen ski area.

We enter above the tree line and immediately passengers can feast their eyes on ski slopes of all shapes and sizes. We bridge over a mogul slope, under a chairlift before making our first pit stop to allow skiers to depart.
