A short journey now. We're travelling from the small southern village of Spijkomere to the thriving city of Groenhuizen and after a change of trains, we finish at the busy rail hub of Groendorp to the north.

Here we start at Spijkomere. It's a small village, though inexplicably has a large Ikea store! We get on the local service which is going to take us all the way to Groenhuizen.

The land here is very flat. For this part of the journey we follow a road along one of the dams before heading over one of the canals.

Next we leave the seaside village of Uithuisorum. Another train is heading in the opposite direction.

At Groenhuizen there are a variety of other services. To the east, both lines head to Maasmaar, but by different routes. We're heading north-west though. At the very top of the picture you can see the avoiding lines. Constructed in the 1970s, this routes the oil and iron ore trains around the busy station.

After changing at Groenhuizen, we pass under the freight line just as an oil train heads over the bridge.

At Ugeest we see an empty iron ore train heading south. This station has a complicated track layout as platforms 2 and 3 are bidirectional to enable maximum flexibility and efficiency. Platform 4, to the right is served only by Loosrecht trains.

As we near our final destination we stop at the town of Hoendoduinen. The high-speed lines can be seen to the left of the four platforms.
NL Rail Journey 7.png

And we arrive at the finish of our journey, Groendorp. This station is one of the busiest on the network. Most of the freight was re-routed on lines around the edge of the city in 2002 as the station became increasingly congested. In addition, the junction to the north of the station was redesigned to improve efficiency. Although the station currently functions smoothly, there is little room for increased capacity. The transport authorities are investigating long-term solutions to increase throughput.

They are all from the Swedish Houses Set. Great set to use if you want something to look European.

I like looking at urban-style transport systems. Are you playing with Cargodist?

I've never used it actually. I did download a version of OTTD with Cargodist, but I haven't got round to playing with it yet. This game is the first in a little while, so I thought I'd stick to what I know for the moment.

I'll post some more shots over the next few days.

Just a quick one tonight...

The picture shows the city of Natohage in the north of the country, first in 1920, then in 1960 and finally in 2010. This town was the site of the first operational steel mill in the country, opening in 1900.
Natohage Time.gif
Natohage Time.gif (917.57 KiB) Viewed 3532 times
Steel produced from the plant was never transported by rail. The plant remained fairly small for many years and was often overshadowed by the newer steel mill in Spijkodoorn which opened in 1935. This second mill had a higher capacity, and due to it's closer proximity to the north-south mainlines, was the main producer of steel in the region.

However, in 1973 the Natohage area was redeveloped. Demand for passenger services in the city was far outpacing the need for freight and so a new line was created, allowing steel mill trains to bypass the busy central station, therefore increasing capacity. At the same time, this allowed longer iron ore and coal trains to transport minerals to Natohage Mill, but it never threatened the dominant Spijkodoorn steel mill. As part of the remodelling, the river was rerouted at great expense, and much of the old station was flattened and redeveloped as houses.

In 1979 the line was improved again, creating a new suburban passenger service. Although this was never part of the original 1973 upgrade, officials recognised the potential for passenger travel with this new line passing so close to the city. As a result new local services share some of the line with the iron ore and coal trains.

It's based loosely around the South Wales area. At the beginning of the century, coal mining and heavy industry create a large, prosperous network until economic troubles see industries, communities and networks wither away...

Sit back and enjoy the view!

We start in 1910. The network is growing. Lines are beginning to connect the towns and industries of the Welsh Valleys. Just to the northwest of the largest town Casnewydd, a chemical tanker train bypasses the village of Corwen and approaches the main docks at Casnewydd Bay.

Coal is the lifeblood of the Welsh Valleys. Here, a full train headed for a steel mill passes through a junction as an empties service heads up the line, ready to be refilled.

1930. The railways are busy as heavy industry brings people and wealth to the area. Just to the west of Casnewydd Bay an empty coal train heads up the freight only line, passing over the West Wales Mainline.

A busy morning at Llangadfan. This station is the terminus for many of the cities passenger services, arriving from the south. To the north, there are several collieries.

Ysg currently sees good traffic and more passenger services are stopping on their way up and down the valleys. The future is uncertain however, as demand for coal is falling across the country and the fragile economy of South Wales looks increasingly vulnerable...

Times are still busy at Blaina, however. The Beaching axe hasn't affected this station as an express thunders towards England on Platform 2. A very old Railcar approaches Platform 5; there isn't much money available for new trains on many of the quieter rural services.

The town of Llanelli depends on the steel mill to support its community. The future looks bleak as political decisions and international competition is making the industries in the area increasingly less profitable.

15 years later and the once busy station of Ysg is a shell of it's original self. A huge number of collieries have been closed to the north, in the valleys and the station is now only serviced by a handful of passenger trains. Most of the freight has stopped, as has the need for a large station...

A redeveloped freightliner terminal is a beacon of hope however, and is helping to attract some freight away from the roads and on to the rails. An almost full intermodal readies for departure from Casnewydd Bay.

Another casualty of the pit closures. The station and the line at Rhydaman have been scales right back. To the west, the line has been single-tracked.
