Looks like the old FreeRails project got forked:
http://freerails2.sourceforge.net/
It's been optimized and bug fixed, and was updated around last Christmas although I'm not sure how active development is now.

Well somebody got a hold of the FreeRails code and improved it and, when the FreeRails author(s) failed to respond to the patches, said somebody created the friendly fork FreeRails2 and made a release.
Open source in action - gotta love it!
