As sticky as a fly strip. Don't touch it or you'll be caught ;)
At least the ideas will stick there, too, and don't get lost ;)

And the currently more important engine discussion doesn't get lost either.

Frame time won't go lower than 28ms (so max FPS is 1000/28=35 FPS). If your PC is too fast, Simutrans starts to give away CPU time to other processes.

Animations (buildings etc.) have a frame time of 300ms IIRC. That's a little more than 3 frames per second.

It's a tradeoff. Higher FPS means less time for the simulation engine, thus less vehicels for the player and worse response times. I tried to find a compromise that works well.

But Simutrans graphics system isn't very fast anyways. Simutrans graphics system is designed to be very portable. Between the OS/Hardware and Simutrans there is an adaption layer that helps to keep the program code platform independant. The drawback of this solution is that the adaption layers interface is the smallest common interface of all supported platforms, and therefore it is often a little inefficient. Benefits are that Simuntrans could be very simply ported to many platforms.

ATM below the adaption layer there is SDL used, which itself is an adaption layer so you might say this is quite silly to have an adaption layer as part of Simutrans. But when Simutrans started I didn't know about SDL (I think it didn't even exist) and wrote my own adaption layers for X-Windows and DOS.

If you go for hardware accelerated graphics the frame rates will easily be much higher than those Simutrans can get with it's graphics engine.

I'd like to get help to improve the graphics. I just can't paint any better and many of my helper cannot, too. Please take a look at my last messages in the thread: "Who will be doing what." I'm quite desperately looking for help with the graphics.
