Multiplayer

Post by orudge »

We should design the game so it's easy to create multiplayer support at a later date. How to do this in a cross-platform way is perhaps a bit tricky - we'll need to use the system layer and do a lot of coding ourselves. We can use DirectPlay on Windows, the TCP/IP or socket libraries on Linux, etc. We should be able to have more than two human players, and the game should obviously be playable over the Internet, as well as on a local area network, and maybe by serial cable, etc.

Obviously, a lot of what we're discussing in this forum right now isn't going to happen for a long time - we need to get the core engine done first - but it's useful to plan ahead.

Anyway Multiplayer is always great for god games (Ai<Humans).

Try "roundtrip time" or "latency time" :)

I think its best to focus now on LAN (not serial or modem).. and specificaly... on the TCP/IP layer so you can enter IP adresses, this makes the game work on the internet..

Also think we should first try make it on windows.. maybe later try to make it for linux...
since most of us have windows, and linux has no DirectX

:D

And who's supposed to create this server software, and who will run the server?

personally I dislike being dependable of some server like BattleNet... you cant start your own internet game.. I dont like that..

Maybe we can ask GameSpy about it ... (but we first have to create game  ) ... and I don't think it will not take much space ... (I could do taht if my PC would 'on' 24h a day)

Us, of course. ;)
and who will run the server?
I might be able to run it on this server, as long as it doesn't use too many resources. Anyway, that's still quite far in the future... we need an engine first!
