For rein: the TT2 engine discussion thread.

Post by Arathorn »

As rein started using the "who will do what" thread for discussing the TT2 engine he made, I have created this thread, so he and others who know about it can do that here, and leave the other thread for it's proper use.

By the way, do you have some cheesy name for your engine already?
Most software developpers have.

I suggest we take existing ones. Hey guess what, let's make a seperate thread for it!
But I think that's for later trouble. Let's first have a full feature wishlist and a game-engine.

So we need a piece of code to adding constant objects (like buildings, trees) ...and code for adding moving objects (vehicles)

Yes and no limitations to anything, the limitations are the biggest pain in the ass of TTD.

No limitations? That's almost impossible. Imagine adding too much stuff to the game, and it grows beyond your memory size... Bye bye performance...

Well, of course some limitations, but you don't have the time to build vehicle fleets to slow down your PC anyway. Of course there can't be a map ten times as big as the TTD map, but still as few limitations as possible.

NO limitation is possible if we use sections in a savegames ...
So TT2 will read to end of section ....
and second important thing is full-user configuration ... so user can easly added buildings, vehicles and so on ... (maybe one ZIP file = one object, and in ZIP will stored info about kind of object and graphics)

yes.. Hellfire is absolutely right! memory used by all variables would be too big (it doesn't matter of course for these, who have 1024ram :D)

so many things have to be fixed... e.g. tile sizes and all stuff connected with'em, thats sad but true and that's why we must decide, which size will the best (IMO current TT is accurate - remember, that we don't need to use e.g one grass tile texture, one water etc. but many of them combined together making whole world non-repeatable)

as for name - Transport Empire - maybe not the most revealing one, but every source file begins wiith header including nice ascii art logo :D

I think that's one of the few names that are not yet taken.

I'd be quite happy for Transport Master to be used. One thing's for sure though - we can't really use "Transport Tycoon II" for legal reasons - the rights to that name are owned by Chris Sawyer/Firaxis.

Well we're not sure about the Firaxis thing, I sent them a message about the take-over but the only thing I got back was an FAQ. but we can use TT2 as a working name.

I was thinking ...we can't use "Transport Tycoon II" but we can use TT2 ... simple shortcut  ... not Trasnport Tycoon 2 only TT2

Hm I don't think Chris is going to be happy about that one, but that doesn't really matter right now.

Well, the project name I registered on SourceForge was tt2, so the web site will be at http://tt2.sourceforge.net/ when everything's sorted out.

I only registered the project this afternoon! It'll take at least 24 hours for them to approve (or disapprove) it.

TT2 and Transport Master both sound fine :) I think we should endeavoure to create the name that represents the best picture of the game (ie if its Transport Master then we can't "own" industries and stuff)
