think of the time involved in createing all those models
yikes!
quicker and easier to use the 2-d sprites.
theres nothing wrong with 2d sprites ... look at the success of the rollercoaster tycoon series.
btw - anyone who has ever looked at whats involved in creating 3d files- geesh - that just seems like way too much work, for too little in return. (yes, the pic may be smoother, fancier, flashier...... but this works well, and conveys the same msg.>

well, 3d wouldn't be a problem from the coding side, it's just USELESS. I've got lost of documentation about 3d programming and also some experience in writing 3d engines, but as i said many times before - there's no need to make tt in 3d!Arathorn wrote:Isometric, I think it would be too difficult to make it 3D, and it wouldn't greatly imrove the game IMHO.
oh, if you really insist on creating tt2 in 3d environment, look at 3DTT 3dtt.running-gag.de

Do you have any Problem with 3DTT?
Well, even if you make it tile-based, 3D is not absolutely useless, since you have one serious advantage: You can look everywhere. No more corners with no insight.
Anyway it will look nicer. Animations are smoother and the perspective of a 3D view is more pleasant for the eye. And if you want to do professional artwork you have to model everything in 3D anyway, even if you only need it for a 2D-sprite.

noooo Peter, it's not like that! I don't have any problem, 3DTT looks great and i wish it a big success - but it's just like a... 'diffrent' kind of game (heh), it's not the same as TTO- player would concentrate here more on great visual effects, large landscapes omitting the main game purpose - building an empire.Peter wrote:Do you have any Problem with 3DTT?
Personally i think, that coordinating hundreds of vehiclesl in 3d world would be much more frustating or just difficult than in a fixed 2d tile-based game... but that's just mine opinion,
if finally decision about making 3d one is made, fine than, i'll try to help you the best i can!

I didn´t mean you to copy 3DTT.
You can still keep an isometric view in 3D. You only have to fix the camera somewhere in the sky looking down with a certain angle of view.
Although it would look and feel similar, it would not look the same. It simply would look better. Much better. And it is not that much more work than you may think. If you think so then you overestimate the effort to create a 3D engine or underestimate the effort to create a 2D engine.
