One snag with multi-platform rail stations, if each platform serves a separate route, is that when you want to start upgrading to a monorail network, there's a lot of work to do. It's easier for passenger trains to use single-platform stations, placing perhaps two in a city, located so as to maximise the passenger potential. When monorails become available, you can then gradually introduce the new technology, especially for the longer routes or where there are few if any intermediate stations on the rout.
