Take over rivals

Why can't I take over rivals? I started in 1950 and I am know in 1980. I can pay their vallue easily, but can't take over them..

All you need to do is go to their company information view (where you see the ugly mug behind the business), and then press the buy shares until 100% have been bought up. If you have already tried that, which part is not working for you?

That doesnt work, I can see "that ugly mug" but the buttons for buying or selling 25% of their company are "frozen"..

Are you perhaps playing openTTD and posting in the wrong forum? In that case, you have to activate "allow buying share from other companies" under "configure patches", as it is disabled by default.

I do apologise for posting on the wrong forum but wanted to keep on topic. I'm a complete newb and have followed the instructions but i still cant seem to be able to take over rivals. I went to Conf patches and selected economy and enabled the allow buying shares bit. The light went from red to green but when i go back into the game i still cannot take over my rivals. Will this only work for new games or is it possible to change this setting on my current game. Sorry i admit i am clueless

You have to change it in the game as well, you just start your saved game and then change it in the patch.

I stumbled onto this thread as I was having the same problem.

Would someone be able to confirm whether I could 'turn on' the buy company feature once I've started a game?

And if so how?

The little wrench menu, configure patches, economy, enable the option.

Hold in the button that you click on to get to your window, there will be a list of companies.
