[REL] Barcelona metro area (w/ and w/o mod)

Post by alessandro »

This is a scenario of Barcelona and its metro area. Scale is rather tight, so that it's all closer to realistic dimensions, although it's still scaled down somewhat. Terrain was created from actual elevation models, and cities are (more or less) realistically placed. The objective is to reach 100% in one hundred years, starting in 1919. It's mostly a free play for fun type of scenario though. No competitors either.

The mod version is chock full of interesting rolling stock. All standard gauge locomotives and EMUs are mods, wagons and coaches are vanilla. Most NG rolling stock is mod as well, except some locomotives to allow for rack operation from the beginning on. Again, wagons and coaches are vanilla.
The rolling stock is intended to be as close as reasonably possible to actual rolling stock of the region. For standard gauge there's some steam locos, and electric ones. No diesel - it was largely phased out in Barcelona in the 1950s. There's also a quite complete progression for standard gauge EMUs, starting from the earliest units in the 1920s (plus the Brill railcar, which didn't run on Renfe lines but on the Ferrocarrils de Catalunya line), to the 446 and 447 units which are still in use currently.
For narrow gauge there's the suburban trains set, since there isn't much early spanish narrow gauge EMUs to be had. In the later years you get the sleek FGC 211 units.
There's also rack rail rolling stock, vanilla at first, Gornegrat Bahn units starting in 1968, and the FGC rack unit from the Montserrat line becomes available in 2003. The closest rack operation to Barcelona is the Montserrat rack railway, the original line ran from the late 19th century until the 50's, and the current line was opened in 2003. This area isn't even on the map. But you can use the rack railway to replace the Vallvidrera funicular (since other than that you'll find little use for it).
For trams there's mostly modded vanilla units (I made those available previously on the Zurich scenario, link is in the object list), plus PCC trams. Barcelona ran american PCCs starting in the early 60s and until the tram system closed in 1971. These PCCs were bought second hand from Washington. For this reason you get the PCC in Philadelphia and Toronto liveries. The green and cream Philadelphia livery is close to the turquoise livery these cars sported in their day. The red and white Toronto livery is similar to Barcelona's currently red and white bus livery

Boats are available, planes are not.

I'd also recommend running all the rolling stock through the Locotool Wrapper for no breakdowns.

Here's a full list of all the rolling stock needed:

Two more screenshots. If one cares about some realistic inclinations, there's space provided to build the Plaza Catalunya station. This station existed above ground from 1865 to 1929, and below ground to this day.

Will have to try this one. I love the scenarios that are slightly more free-play than challenge!
