[REL] Birmingham and West Midlands

Fed up with the delays at New Street? Think you could get the trains running on time?

Now you can have a go yourself, with Andysine's West Midlands Scenario!

Birmingham and West Midlands v1.2
Start Date: 1970
Difficulty: Easy

Image
Notes:
In this scenario you should be able to create almost all the major routes within the West Midlands area. Some of the scenery has been altered to make it easier, for instance there are bridges under most of the motorways at strategic places, and there a pre-made cutting for New Street Station. You should also be able to design Snow Hill or Moor Street over the top. There are a couple of extra cities named 'THE NORTH', 'THE SOUTH WEST' etc., to represent freight and passengers from these areas of the country. With these you should be able to create a profitable freight and passenger network.

Version 1.1
+ More towns on route to Stratford-Upon-Avon added.
+ Other minor fixes.

Version 1.2
+ Warwick moved to a more accurate position.
+ Factory added in The North.

My savegame.

The entire network should run pretty much on its own, though some trains do occasionally get lost. There may be some jams around New Street, particularly the eastern side, but these are largely self-clearing. The network is not very efficient (there are frequent hold-ups on some parts of the network) but my focus was on realism, not efficiency.

Most of the services are operated by Central Trains under the Centro name. A Centro route map can be found here. The map also shows other services as grey routes, though you should be able to determine which operators run these without too much trouble.

EDIT: I'm not an expert, but as far as I can remember some of the non-centro routes are;

First Great Western from the South-West to Worcester
Virgin Cross Country from the South-West (Taunton-Bristol) to New Street.
Virgin Cross Country from the South (Bournemouth-Southampton-Reading-Oxford) to Leamington Spa, Coventry, Birmingham International to New Street, then on to Burton-Upon-Trent and the North.
Arriva Trains from North Wales to Telford and Wolverhampton
Central Trains City Link service from East Anglia (Cambridge-Peterborough-Leicester) to Nuneaton then New Street.
Virgin Trains from London to the North via Rugby and the Trent Valley Line.
Virgin trains from London via Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham International, New Street, Wolverhampton and Stafford.

On a historical note http://www.railaroundbirmingham.co.ukis a site that not only covers the region depicted but shows routes that closed as well as in depth about the stations and relics in the area.

hi andysine, will you be posting version 1.1 of this scenario?

by andysine
Oh crap. I thought I did to be honest, but maybe I forgot. Either I have posted it and replaced the old one, but the name hasn't been updated, or I forgot. I'm on my mac atm, so I can't do anything about it, but I'll try and get it up tomorrow. I might even release v1.2 - Warwick and Leamington Spa are not in the correct locations in relation to each other and it is not possible to transport goods along the WCML in v1.0 + v1.1 because there is no factory in the north. These will be fixed in v1.2.

Regards
Andy

it doesn't show up when I open Locomotion. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Check that the file is inside the Scenarios folder. If it is, have you downloaded the right file? The scenario should end in .SC5 (.SV5 is a save game)

It's inside the Scenarios folder, and it is an SC5 file.

Try duoble-click it (the file) when the LoMo CD is inserted and LoMo is not running. It should work. Got this error before, not this scenario, but anyways...

Thanks for this. Just loaded up the BR Set from scratch again and fired up your saved game. My 2-year old loves it! Lots of trains going instantly! His dad likes it too

Maybe he'll give me a chance to actually complete the scenario myself one of these days...

I'd just like to bump this to say...

I love the savegame! Brilliant stuff. I've updated the trains to make them feel a bit "more 2011", such as adding Arriva 158s, Cross Country 170s and London Midland 350s, and I've also thrown in aircraft from the A320 set for a bit of eye candy at Birmingham Airport.

Would I be allowed to upload the updated savegame onto here? No worries if I can't. :)
