Fictional landscapes

Understandably, generating greyscale images like those required for the landscape generators is just a little painful. Are there any tools out there that would let you play around and model some terrain without having to resort to Loco's limited tools or playing trial-and-error with 150,000 pixels?

It's primary function is to render incredible detailed landscapes, but it can also export it's highmaps... the program also has a good random highmap creater, and very good tools to do your own... and the best of it: It's free
