What do you look for first?

In regards to just a random map, what do you look for first?

Cargo routes for bulk?

Quick profit passenger routes?

While not new to TT and Locomotion, I don't consider myself an expert...I dabble in it when I get bored of other games.

I ahve checked out Open TT and like it...A LOT.

Thanks for insights/thoughts/tips/etc

X

Start small, i.e. trams or buses. Don't go crazy. Passenger routes are good.

First thing I look for is the largest towns and cities and set up a few bus services. That way I can start to get a small but steady income that goes towards funding more ambitious projects that will get more money.

Once I waste a ton of money on buses after getting carried away I look for industry. I always start off with the easy ones first. Such as ones that are close together or have the fewest changes in height. This gets me slightly more income that enables me to tackle the more difficult industries that are further away.

Once I get to that stage in the game I start looking back at passengers. Setting up long distance routes for passengers rakes in a ton of money.

I always look for a big city to start out with buses in with an industry that makes goods or food.
Then i connect it to other towns with trains and they grow

Bit of a bump..

I tend to do just the opposite. I tend to find a nice short to mid distance bulk cargo. Coal, Ore, lumber, oil.. they all pay well .. even if you sink all of your starting funds into the route. you will make your money back fast.

I tend to stay away from passengers until I am ready to grow a town to a city. with the speed towns grow in this game. I tend to avoid growing them until I am ready.

It also depends on the player. some people like moving passengers more then cargo... some people like freight more..
That's one of the perks of the game. You can build your transport empire in your own style and tastes..

In my opinion, passengers are a better cargo for beginners. Once the route is established, it will become more profitable with time. Just be sure not to pick remote locations, even if passengers are accepted there.

I'm bad at everything. The only scenario I've cleared is Boulder Breakers, and that's it.

I generally will look for a short point-to-point route between two industries that will pay off well, often using a train with 3 cars, or a well loaded trucking route with 2-4 trucks.

I used to do that, but now I do long routes in the 2-lane style that the AI always sets up. Sometimes I use 4 lanes if necessary.

If there is a coal mine a reasonable distance from a power plant I will build a line to the power plant. Next would be passenger lines from the largest cities.

Weather world is also particularly easy. Just open an airline route between the two largest cities on the map, and use buses, trams, or trains if necessary.

I believe, without a doubt that a coal line to a power station is the only way to go. If not a power station, the a steel mill if either one is nearby. I normally use the cheapest loco plus about seven wagons attached to start me off. If coal is to far away, then look for something like lumber, wheat or oil etc. Basically, anything to get you going with an income. You may have to borrow extra money, but you will soon get that back.

This is the way I do it, it works for me.

Regards.

I used to do just passengers first. I usually pick the 2 largest cities and set up a tram or a few buses. I then look for Iron Ore, Coal or Oil route. These to me make the most money. Along with the trams and buses, you start to make enough money to build bigger.

To make your life easier before start a scenario - look at the Keyboard Shortcuts:

How to build/sell railtracks more efficiently/faster (go to the Options - Keyboard Shortcuts and bind new keys):
Construction: Build at current position: Enter
Construction: Remove at current position: Backspace
Close Top-most Window: Del (like in OTTD)

For me it's better and more efficient than constantly mouse clicking.

Feature introduced in Release v21.09 OpenLoco.
Feature: [#784] Optional keyboard shortcuts for construction window.
