desperately need detailed info on signals

hello
i'm quite a newbie, and trying to figure out how signals work. i understand the basics of oneway/two way signals and semaphore signals, but i can't put them effectively into use. some scenarios include :

* how to place signals when two trains with seperate tracks use the same station
* how to place signals when 2 main tracks and multiple trains use a 4 track station
* how to place signals on ground level crossings.

the list goes on. any info/links/pdf files on the subject would be appreciated. thanks

For ground based crossings, you need 4 lots of signals
