Ok, i used a tram line through a small village the other day, and it expanded a hell of A LOT in a short amount of time.
I thought it might be a usful example!
Look at the town of 'Ashley' How much its grown in such short time because of trams from other near by towns and cities

A dedicated right of way can work well too... the screenshot below shows a hastily knocked-up example. Basically, the tram tracks run alongside the main road, meaning you can have the same bus and tram shared stops, but the trams won't be held up by the crazy road vehicle AI... plus the trams can provide a good link to the distant reaches of a big city or to smaller communities where building a standard guage rail link isn't viable yet.

I put in trams early to let population expand for railways to make more money (I remove them after a while)

Seconded. First thought your name was spaceman-spliff

On Swiss Alps got 3 Trams working in tandem on the same route (synchronized too :P ) and now got 400 passengers at the 3 outlets.

trams aren't the only thing to expand the city ofcourse. but if you use 2 or more of them, the city expands in no time.

should there be more trams to buy?
i've made just 2 new ones. should there be more?

Well, in Toronto they didn't change their streetcars that much... it went rubbish old ones, Whitt cars, PCC cars, modern CLRV cars, and that's a space of over 100 years there.

But yes, if you want to make some more (a PCC car in particular would go down well, as would a Whitt to replace that little abomination we start the game with) I for one would welcome it.

I also do passenger transport. Mostly I use trams but also I use trains A LOT. After when the citys are covering most of the map I put in a subway. It rocks then I expand my transportation system.

Also can anyone mod a Mk 3 car that England has to make a mail car. (I would like the default one modded graphic wise)

Usually because of this lack of mail cars after the Mk 1 I usually only use the Mk 1 and it's mail car.
Image I like Articulated Buses or Streetcars (Although I really like anything with wheels including planes, Thanks to Seelenquell for making Toronto's ALRV and CLRV for Locomotion. All we need now is a TTC D40LF and D60LF to go with the LRVs. Plus the Scarborough RT vehicles too.)
Resion for the LRV's is to make a good alternative to buses. Visit Here for more info.

This isn't the right place to post this. But please see the BR Set for the 325 Mail unit, used on the WCML.

Single tramcars running on a simple loop then when they have generated enough cash to build large scale railways for freight its bye bye! Often as not in a fiery fireball of exploding tramcar, no if you want to keep the cities reasonable do not use street level transport.

I got a good idea. Build the trams underground!
That way it won't merge with road transport but is very expensive

On one of my custom scenarios I build a short span of tramline underground when my competitor's tramlines took my building space. it spoilt the view of my tramline but at least can still carry passengers. (note: the underground part is only 1/5 of my line but the cost is 6/9 of the whole!) Why Locomotion tunnels are so expensive? RCT2 tunnels are just 2 times the price.
OH YEAH! LOCOMOTION CUSTOM TRAIN RULEZ! GO AMI TRAINS STAFF!!!
my first crash: when i was a child
i crashed a narrow gauge SLM HG with a broad gauge stim tren on a railroad crossing with no signals-I don't know how to use signals XD

Probably because real life tunnels are very expensive too!

I find money becomes so irelivent so quickly I find it hard to care about costs.

Bit of a pointless bump which adds nothing to the subject. Don't do it again.
Thank you.
