Stop industries from closing, temporarily.

Post by mauried »

All of the industries in the game seem to belong to one or more of the towns in the game and have the towns name in the name of the industry.
Periodically an industry will announce its imminent closure, which usually means it closes pretty quickly after announcement.
Is it possible to provide an option for players to prevent the imminent closing by pouring lots of money into the town authority that owns the industry.
Currently players can provide all kinds of subsidies and payments to the town authorities to provide improvements in the towns themselves,so adding an extra line allowing the town owned industry to keep going would itself be easy to do.
Obviously the cost of keeping industries open using this method would have to increase over time so eventually it would not be viable to keep the industry open forever.
The idea is primarily for the industries that produce the raw materials like the mines, forests and the oil rigs.

no, once the industry announces closure, it's already too far gone to be rescued. all you can do is fund a new industry in the same place.

And for primary industries, you can't even do that.

This is not necessarily 100% realistic, as mines, oilfields et cetera in real life usually don't close when the last bit of their resoeces has been drained completely. They usually become economically unviable a lot earlier than that - e. g. in the case of coal, you start mining close to the ground and then have to go deeper and deeper when the cheap deposits close to the ground have been depleted.

But transport companies get paid for transporting stuff from A to B. The idea of a transport company throwing huge sums of money at a failing industry just so it can keep generating soke freight revenue from that industry is just kind of nonsensical even in a fairly loose and streamlined economy model as that of OpenTTD.

The simple solution if you find industry closures annoying and don't want to deal with them is using a NewGRF that disables indhstry closedowns. If you want to play with industry closedowns, you just have to accept that they are ofthen inconvenient, that is their entire point.
