add a way to see the work area of the suptropical lumber mill

Post by andreasaspenberg »

since it cuts trees near it, it would really help the player see where it is possible to plant trees. another suggestion is to change the marker when creating new industries so that the play can see where they end up.

it is not really possible to show the industry that will be built, as each industry can have multiple layouts that differ in shape and size, and which one of those is chosen is not known at that time

the "worst" example of this is probably the tourist centre fom ECS Vectors.

You can just leave that lumber mill be until it cuts everything and you'll be able to see the area. Though I'd recommend just disabling that mechanic as babysitting lumber mills gets annoying pretty fast.

Tourist centre isn't a problem actually as at any point you have either 1 layout that will fit or none.

it is not all industries that have different layouts. farms does not, nor do plantations. gold mines and iron mines also have one design. they could at least allow players to see the where those will be placed.

Even if that is true, it wouldn't be possible to run this check on every mouse movement.

An idea that was once thrown around was to calculate the minimum and maximum extent of the layouts in each direction, and use different colours for the resulting areas

Why not? I'm already running this check for every visible tile and it's works fine for the most part: https://i.imgur.com/Gz6SOY6.png
