If the station is going a month at a time with no pickup, you need more vehicles.
Road vehicles are pretty much the easiest type of vehicle to keep ratings high with, because each vehicle carries so little cargo. You can keep a constant stream of loading vehicles at the industry without having significant capacity sitting idle.

You should be able to get station ratings of at lest 70% with just road vehicles, regardless of distance. As long as you have enough vehicles such that at least one is loading at any time, the rating should stay at the maximum achievable.

What is the station rating and what is the percentage transported from the industry?
Station ratings don't care about amount of cargo in transit, it only cares about cargo piling up on the station.
Industries are not guaranteed to increase production just from being well served, there is always a random element to it.

Next time it happens, please upload a savegame here for somebody to look at. It's difficult to diagnose your issues based on descriptions alone.
