what about the ability to add disasters with NewGRFs? I heard that it's not planned, so just wanted to tell you now, whoever made OpenTTD.

This would be a nice thing to be able to do. My undertstanding is disasters are hard coded.

Is it possible to create a similar event using gamescripts to alter tiles and generate sprites to emulate the effects of disasters?

There isn't any way for a gamescript to create and control a disaster vehicle, though it might be possible to design an API of sorts for it. A problem would however be that gamescripts don't have a way to supply vehicle graphics, so it would either need to depend on baseset graphics, or depend on the player loading some specific NewGRF file, or require an additional NewGRF feature for supplying disaster vehicle graphics, and maybe other disaster graphics even?

Currently gamescripts also lack functions to do some of the typical disaster-like things, like causing an industry to blow up and rebuild, force an industry to change production level, cause a player vehicle to crash, and probably many other things you can think of. (How about deleting some cargo from player vehicles or stations?)

So no, GS is not yet ready to perform disasters.

oh, yeah! I want to add tornado to OpenTTD, so if a tornado comes pretty close to a vehicle or station, but not close enough to destroy it, it will randomly remove cargo from it to simulate passengers and cargo being sucked up into the tornado.
EDIT: Will Gamescript eventually be ready for disasters? If no, that's somewhat sad.

Or Rivers that swell and eat all the roads, tracks, bridges, tunnels within 5 squares?
