What about shared railroads between companies?
The owner earn money form other companies when the use his track.
Cost can be selectet in a menue and depents on tiles and time a track is uses by another Company.

Railroad Tycoon had this, but if I recall correctly, you could only switch it on/off, no other configure options. This could be a nice option if handled correctly

This is possible through the Infrastructure Sharing patch, and allows for shared railway track/stations, as well as shared bus stops, truck stops, docks and Airports.

given that the patch is around practically unaltered for like 10 years, i'd think "later" is the better prediction...

Highly unlikely to happen. Nothing major seems to go into trunk anymore

Why don't you fork instead of whining?

There are:
  • almost zero active developers
  • zero new competent people who want to be developers
You might as well complain about gravity and other physical facts.

Unrelated: I've given up working on OpenTTD stuff, it's no longer fun. I'm now playing World of Tanks Blitz.

Because those are completely unrelated, and also i'm not going to work on a piddly little fork with no chance of getting anything into the main thing. It's a complete waste of my already a waste of life.

ok, i can't tell you what to think, but why do you then go on spreading this negativity? how does that help reviving the project?

Because people should know when their hopes are not all that likely, so they can either try doing it for themselves, or find another hope.
Unfortunately people never did that for me, and I'm super depressed from it, woo!

So go work on a fork. Improve your skills. And when there's nobody left to develop trunk, request to become a developer and then have at it.

I'm getting a rather surreal sense of déjà vu...
