I've been thinking about this problem, where in some games, I'd specialise in road vehicles, but the pathfinder doesn't make them go the right way.
So I was thinking, perhaps waypoints could be implemented for road vehicles and aircraft in a similar way they're implemented for trains and boats?
I mention aircraft because in case anyone implements a limitation for aircraft (ie: altitude restrictions for small aircraft) waypoints could act to path aircraft past a specific mountain range or something?
Just an idea.

you can use "go non-stop via" orders with road vehicles to simulate waypoints.
and there is no technical reason why there couldn't be aircraft waypoints (beacons). just nobody has done it, and there's no gameplay reason to include them, so you might have difficulty convincing a dev.
