Tracks on road

Post by LevelCrossingFan555 »

It would be cool if you could run trains on a road like trams in OpenTTD. That would be cool for Britannia Bridge styled level crossing. And in USA it's called street running. It would be also good if you could have 4 sets of lights if the track is close to it, so they won't get stuck inside, had one case of that, had to stop all my trains and turn them around to release the car.

Create a track set that uses the street sprites as its foundation inside cities?

Build a tram set with train sprites instead?

That'd create really weird main stations etc. xD But I guess you could code it as a separate railtype altogether ...

It'd just be a visual thing, eye-candy, not something RVs could actually use.

A few examples of full size trains (not trams) on roads: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_running

I personally like the idea of "track set that uses the street sprites as its foundation" as an alternative rail type.

It's definitely discussed before, for example here:

I also see why perhaps nobody so far has done this. You'd either need multiple railtypes or you're restricted to certain roads, not all possible combinations ^^;

Of the two options I presented, I think it would be more interesting to see the OpenGFX (or OpenGFX+) trains recoded as tram. But if you're not playing with too many track sets, a new track type for such eyecandy could be more desirable.

Like this one?
I've thought about that, but how about the collision between car and train?

It can be treated as a very long level crossing.
I miss such possibility, sometimes I must send a freight train into the town centre, but without road demolishing (due to local authority or avoiding town growth problems).

BTW, so called street running it is not very unusual case:

A very long crossing?
Will train behave like a tram on it?
Or it will crush all the RVs on the "long crossing"?

If you put a long long crossing, and plenty of rvs on it, then an AsiaStar come, than it will be a long "firework" on the street.
