Suggestion: Toolbar stretching for larger resolutions

Post by Snorbuckle »

OpenTTD is great, and the feature I like most about it is the ability to change resolutions, but the fact that the top and bottom bars seem to shrink is rather annoying. I'd like them to remain the same size on my screen, but to be able to see more of the map in the main part of the screen.

But please, tell me if this is already possible, as I may be missing something.

The bottom bar could be stretched without problems. Just extend the gray bar, and put date to the left, and money to the right.

There would be problems though with the top-bar. Because stretching it would mean having to increase the size of the icons. Doing it programmatically would surely mean that they would become ugly, or at least uglier, pixeled. Doing it by hand would mean making new icons for every possible resolution, and that's not gonna happen :)

You could also leave the icon size's and make more room between the icons.

That's better.

But if the icon's size remains the same at a higher resolution, wouldn't these icons become to small?

Well, everything becomes small, trains, stations, towns, etc :)

If playing on windows try CTRL+D, it will zoom in double. Very useful on high resolutions

perhaps they will, perhaps you still could see them very well.

but when they are to small, you have to look at which resolution it is to small, and then load a new (or resize the) image.

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of the RCT system, where the icons are grouped. The icons would need to be larger though, or they'd just get too small.

But you'll need to click at icons. Stations for example are big enough to click at.

I think its just the normal zoom-in zoom out function which now also works using your mouse wheel. Nothing new except that (and the keyboard shortcut).

No, with Ctrl-D everything is doubled. Meaning: All the windows as well. The small text even becomes readable. But it only works on Windows.

Hi guys,

My first post here but:
how about convert the icons into the highest possible resolution(1280x1024) and then scaling down? With a little gaussian blur that may do the trick but if not just make a newer high resolution one?

Will

Sooner or later OpenTTD will have 32 Bit graphics and a new GUI.

IMO bigger icons are stupid:
1. it requires a great deal of work to draw them so that they don't look pixeled.
2. there would be loads of new sprites to add.
3. the programming might be a bit complicated (don't know)
4. I find it would look silly because of the proportions. Huge icons and tiny trains? boaah... I'm sure it would make the world look even smaller.

I'd find it best if the size stayed as it is and the whole icon bar was centered (like the news bar at the bottom).
BTW: I don't think the news bar should be stretched because it would take ages until a piece of information has gone across the whole width.

ATM the toolbar position, and subsequent menus positions are hardcoded. So it is difficult to draw the toolbar to the centre.

Hm, but what about the news bar? It's centered. Would it be really so hard to do the same with the icon bar?
