My new computer runs openttd.... worse?

Hi,
I got my new MacBook Pro last week, and my openttd is running like crap. My old Mac, which was from 2010, ran the software with no lag at all. I'm really confused.
My specs are:
2,7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3
Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB

I know that my old mac had an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card.

Is that the problem?

Kind regards,
Noah

OpenTTD doesn't use GPUs, so that's not really a problem. There have been some bugs that were recently fixed related to performance issues on MacOS. I think they should have been rolled out in 1.9.3, but if not then download the latest nightly release and see if that improves.

Known issue. Every new Mac I buy, OpenTTD runs slightly slower. :)

There might be solutions, but none of the core developers has access to a recent Mac as far as I know. Mac support is 'best efforts' from people often working blind.

Hi, I've tried to download the nightly version of openttd, still lags a lot. Any other suggestions?

I usually get about 16-20fps in a typical game, with a hundred vehicles or so, on a 256x256 map.

My Mac is not a very high-spec computer - 2019 Macbook Pro, Intel Core i7-8569U @2.8Ghz

In no particular order, these may be some help or no help at all :)
  • Turn 'full animation' off
  • Use smaller maps
  • Use fewer vehicles
  • Open a news message, and watch fps jump to 33-34fps (no really, I have reliably reproduced this multiple times)
  • Replace your Mac with an older one which runs OpenTTD faster, e.g. a 2009 Core Duo 2 or similar
  • Install Windows (but we have one or two reports of OpenTTD being slow on some Windows versions too)
  • Switch to Linux (you can no longer install Linux on your Mac though if it has a T2 chip), so you'll need a new computer
  • Accept 20fps
