good explanation of signals

If you mean the normal signals there is some good explanations here : http://wiki.openttd.org/FAQ and some more if you do some searching on the forum.


If you mean the programmable signals:
The second post of the patchpack you are playing with has a bunch of links to the patches included, may I suggest following those links and familiarize yourself with those patches a little bit before trying to use them.

Also browsing through the patchpack thread may reveal some answers as other people had the same questions before you.

You use a probably seriously patched version, your screenshot shows more signal types than official versions include. So ask your patch author.

Otherwise use the usual ressources where signals are explained in length, Chillcore already gave the links, others are http://wiki.openttd.org/Signal and http://kokolokus.de/?s=blog&v=6 and another by Uwe where I don't find the link right now. Generally much information at the end of a very simple search.
