Define orders per group

Post by binerf »

Hi,

Sorry, I've already checked in forum but found nothing relevant or too old.

I'd like to group vehicles and define orders per group.
When I move vehicle to another group, it takes orders defined for this different group.

Is it possible you think ?

Thanks in advance.

This is not done automatically. However, when you move a vehicle to a new group, you can do the following:
  1. Select the vehicle you just moved.
  2. From the list of orders, click Go to, then ctrl+click one of the vehicles already in the group.
This way the vehicle will share orders with the other vehicles in its new group.

Put in other words:

You can make groups based on shared orders,
but you cannot make shared orders based on groups.

Probably in most transport games, you first create a connection and then add vehicles that support that connection to it. So yes, adding a feature like this would be cool. :)
I am sorry for may English. I know is bed.

Would be nice but once you've gotten used to the way OpenTTD handles it (and found the "Add vehicles with shared orders" button) the current method is very usable and completely overhauling it is probably not worth the effort.

Basically, sometime city doesn't accept goods anymore for a period.

I've created trains which transport only good from "factory" to city.

When city refuses goods, trains are useless and reduce drastically their revenues.

For this kind of event, I'd like to create trains groups like "Goods from factory to city 1" with route defined... from factory to city 1 8)
When city 1 refuses goods, I'd like to move trains from this group to another group for which another route is defined.

Not sure I'm clear but I hope you get my point.

When city 1 refuses goods, I'd like to move trains from this group to another group for which another route is defined.
#1 Buy one train, give it orders to move goods from Factory to City 1
#2 Buy more trains as needed via "Copy Train" and CTRL+Click, setting up the new trains to have shared orders
#3 Create a group called "Goods from Factory to City 1"
#3 CTRL+Drag any one of your trains into that group - the others will automatically also be assigned to the group

Now, when the city stops accepting goods:

#1 Open the timetable for any of your trains in the "Goods from Factory to City 1", delete its "Go to City 1" order and add an "Go to City 2" order
#2 Rename the "Goods from Factory to City 1" group to "Goods From Factory to City 2".
#3 Profit!

(And I have successfully managed 200 ... 300 trains plus several hundred road vehicles with this system. It does take a little bit of getting used to it and is less intuitive than the system in Transport Fever, where you first set up a line and then add vehicles, but it has the massive advantage that you do not need to first set up a line. I often have freight lines that are served by a single train, and I usually don't set up groups for those because it just isn't worth it.)
