Weird Idea

Post by TrainLover »

I'm wondering what it would take for OpenTTD to have a 'realistic' scale. Would it be more of NewGRF changes, or would it be more of changes that would be enacted via source-code/patches?

By realistic scale, I mean like 1 km^2 would be 1 tile, so coaches would be ~1/50 of a tile. Houses would have to be scaled down, and everything had to be scaled town.

Not a weird idea, but it would probably throw a lot of things out of whack, and thus fall under being more trouble than its worth.

You may have a chance with 50m tile or smth, but 1km makes no sense whatsoever.

50m seems about right. An average rail car length is around 24.5m, and in OpenTTD usually 2 cars fill a tile. In real life the average length of a block in most mager cities is around 250m, at a 50m standard in OpenTTD a block of 3 tiles would then be 150m.

Ah, so it would fall more under the realm of a NewGRF rather than a patch.

No, you'd have to change the core game. Currently it has no concept of distance and time, other than tiles and ticks.

Depends on what exactly you want to do. You may get away with only a newgrf if you chose your scale right. But if you insist on 1km tile it may be easier to just make a new game :p

What about the width of the railway? The load gauge of most railways is less than 5 meters wide. Given the scale of 50m per tile, you should be able to fit about 10 parallel tracks into one tile, yet the game permits just one track to be placed (or two tracks in a diagonal direction). This limitation makes the game world incurably disproportional; no scale can be fitted so as to look realistic.

True, but cars tend to be 10-12m wide, so "realistically" you're looking at two parallel tracks with a buffer zone of 12m in the middle and 6m on each side. In that regard it makes tram tracks look at bit more "realistic" but since we currently don't have a way to fit two tracks AND junctions into the same tile (not even for road vehicles or trams), it's a moot point, and as you pointed out, disproportional.

Airports are much more fun, with around 1 km^2, these would start at 100x100 tiles for the smaller airports
