Combined grain/livestock trains for farms?

Post by globester »

Is it more effective to have 1 train that carries both livestock and grain, or 2 trains that carry livestock and grain separately? I'm thinking the first option might reduce the number of trains and platforms necessary?

My experience is that it is difficult to find the right ratio of wagons with a single train so it may wait too long.

Normally I do combined trains with low production, then when it's bigger production I separate.

Just have trains with both grain and livestock, set "full load any cargo", so one of them if fully loaded, and the other one is partly loaded when it leaves. Amounts don't matter then, it sorts it out all itself.

I generally go for farms with the most imbalanced production rates and ship only the majority cargo.

My personal preference is this, for most situations:
1. Each cargo gets separated.
2. Each cargo gets at least two trains.
3. Trains have just enough cars to sit and be filled in the amount of time it takes for the other train to make a complete run.
4. I add more cars or more trains as production outpaces the rate of delivery.

In my experience it's generally more efficient to have separate trains - for the reason somebody said above, getting the ratio right is frustratingly elusive.
Where farms have particularly low production rates a combined train can be effective. In this situation what I generally do is have a few farms feeding into a 'rendezvous' station which then has enough cargo to warrant single-cargo trains.

So, the short answer is yes, but you probably don't want to!
