Looking for a type of game that might not be a thing
Are there games where you work on it for a few days and then you send the save to the next person in queue?

No, sorry. You can try multiplayer. Just host a server and play with your friends simultaneously. How to start a server: https://wiki.openttd.org/Server

I've seen some people play the game like that. each player plays for 10 ingame years, and then passes the game on

There is no official type of game for that, but you can send the game file to another person.

Use the forum, probably works best if everybody posts a game, and picks up the game of the previous post.
Being a retired OpenTTD developer does not mean I know what I am doing.

Well, if this type of game-play is going to be a thing, you must take OpenTTD version, NewGRFs, patches etc. into account. However if you really want to have this sort of game-play, a thread for each game is recommended. This is fine if multiplayer is not an option due to very limited internet access, or you just not comfortable in using multiplayer yet, especially for new players who are just starting out.
