Railway inclines ... build a bridge or rail up a hill?

Post by charityalbumman »

Note: I tend to use the following rail newgrfs: Pikka UK Renewal Set, Total Bridge Renewal Set v1.2 and BK Enhanced Tunnels v1.2.

In your opinion, when a railway is raising from one level to another; is it better to build a bridge or simply just place rail on an inclined tile?

i.e. Am I correct in assuming the incline building a bridge between two tiles is a more gentle slope than a single hill tile placed rail?

I hope you all understand what I'm asking as I found it hard to word what I'm after :/
Thanks for any help, Pete 8)

I just tested this, and it depends on your "slope steepness for trains" setting. This setting apparently only applies to slopes on terrain and not bridges. So if it's set any higher than 0%, trains will go slower on sloped terrain than up a bridge. Very interesting. :)

To find this setting you have to select the "Expert (show all settings, including weird ones)" category in Settings.

I will continue to build bridges up a hill then :) Cheeky but it makes sense because you can control the incline on a bridge compared to the terrain. Many thanks.

Yeah, I tested it several times and bridges are faster. Don't know if it's intended behaviour or not but it's definitely the slope steepness setting that does it.

Well my train_slope_steepness setting is set to 2 with realistic acceleration enabled.
