Logistics Management Challenge trains Chinese students via OpenTTD

Post by kamnet »

I just happened to stumble upon this interesting gem this evening.

http://www.openlmc.com/

This is the website for the Logistics Management Challenge. Over two dozen universities and hundreds of students in China are using OpenTTD to help educate business and science students on logistics and management through a series of organized competitions. Teams are organized in groups of 3-5 students, and use Weibo, WeChat and QQ to train and communicate playing strategy. The competition goes through several rounds. After each round of competition, teams must submit not only their scoring data, but must also submit an in-depth analysis of their game and photos from the competition in order to score points.

This may be one of the most awesome uses of OpenTTD I've ever seen!

Is really great and interesting news.

OTTD is more than a simple game, and now we have the proof. A perfect game for some educational purposes, for more is complicated because the basis of the game is simple... A game for fun. And is perfect.

For more, and intense simulations, other programs exist.

Are there any good open source transport simulators that are more complex than OpenTTD? Or in that case, are there any transport simulators more complex than OpenTTD?

By open source, price (free) and date (original release in 1994-5), OTTD is one of the better, maybe the best, transport simulators of all time.

However, the years pass, and more programs arrives with new things and improvements...
But not many programs are in the level of OTTD.

In any case, for a full transport simulation, only specific and really, incredible, complex programs have the final hit. University, governmental programs, and similars are the final solution by a simply reason... The rest are games and this are prepared for full simulations.
In respect of the price and availability of them, mmm :-) No words.
